Temple Terrace is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on December 21, 1892 by Presbyterian missionaries who named it after theirurchin temple in Philadelphia. The town originally consisted of just a few homes and a Baptist church. In 1906 the first school opened and in 1922 the first post office opened. In 1933, Temple Terrace incorporated as a village. On April 12 of that year, it elected its first mayor, Wm Fenton Dickson. In 1945, residents approved an annexation plan for nearby Seminole County which would make Temple Terrace part of that county's new city limits. Temple Terrace is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 801 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Temple Terrace was John Baptiste Foreman who arrived in 1838. He named his land "Temple" after the nearby Mount Zion Baptist Church which he had seen from his plantation on Pensacola Bayou. The church started construction in 1839 and served as a stop on stagecoaches between Jacksonville and Tampa until it burned down in 1856. A post office called Temple Terrace was established in 1845, and remained in operation until 1959. As of the 2000 Census, there were 707 people residing in the town. 98% of whom identified themselves as White Protestant Christians; 2% identified themselves as African American; 0.5% reported being Hispanic or Latino; and 1% reported being Muslim or Islamic faith (0%). The first school to be built here was a schoolhouse located east of present day Temple Terrace on Big Pine Key Road near mile marker 211. This school operated from 1847-1854 when it was destroyed by Seminole Indians during their War for Independence campaign against Spanish America under General Antonio López de Santa Cruz y Cajal y Pacheco alias Don José Martínez de la Cerda y Menéndez de Avilés y Hidalgo who also renamed Fort Myers after himself following his capture there on October 6th of that year while serving with troops loyal to Mexico under General Pedro de Ampudia y Salinas). For many years this spot served as an open air market for produce grown by local farmers along Pensacola Bayou just across from where Fort Myers stands today! In 1861 when Confederate forces captured key fortifications including this post they razed all but one building within minutes leaving only the old school standing before moving inland towards Stone Mountain where they found new munitions manufacturing plants underway that would later become known as Samsung Electronics Incorporated . Although never occupied again Post Office officials did not abandon hope of reopening either due to changes taking place within Polk County at that time or Army orders refusing to surrender any abandoned posts givenchy’s law stated “No Union Soldier shall work on Public Works except during Defence...and such officer shall issue full instructions upon request” however no action ever transpired…until 1974 when a group of locals began restoring and renovating this building which they continued to do until its demolition in 2009! According to historian Tom Sosnoff's book "Folklore Of South Florida", temple terrace may have been derived from two early Indian settlements: Tequesta Point (now known as Clearwater) & Okeechobee Townsite (now known as Stonington). These villages were located south-west of Tampa around PRESCOTT KEY point about 12 miles long parallel to SR 441/SR 527 west of NASSAU BAYOU—approximately midway between Tampa & St Petersburg—just before US 41 met NASSAU BAYOU about 25 miles north-northwest of STONINGTON….In 1763 Captain James Cook discovered these islands well off Tampa Bay & Callao River mouth….the area now lay mainly within modern Lake City limits except for about 10 acres extending into unincorporated territory northeastward thence included among those land grants made subsequent thereto by Governor James Broome…..Under British rule these lands became part of East Hillsborough Township…. virtually everything east OF PRESCOTT KEY point shoreline belonged originally TO EAST HILLSBURG TOWNSHIP……..Toward THE middle OF THE 19TH CENTURY THOSE AREAS WERE TRANSFERRED BACK TO PALM CITY COUNTY FROM EAST HILLSBURG TOWNSHIP……..Today most people living IN AND NEAR TemPLE TERRACE call themselves AMERICAN INDIAN OR NATIVE FOLKS….. Prior to European settlement there were numerousSeminole Tribe members living here including some whose descendants still live HERE…..An interesting footnote about this community is that despite their name change following Indian trouble with white settlers nearly 200 years ago none OF THE TEQUESTA POINT FAMILIARS EVER RETURNED HOME From earliest recollections many Creek Indians STILL LIVE HERE WITH THEIR CANOEES & GUNS!!!
