Temple Terrace is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Temple Terrace was made by Andrew Johnson and his family in 1853. They named their land "Tampa Bay," after the bay where they were located. In 1907, two brothers by the name of Kapp and Armstrong bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of Temple Terrace from J.P. Morgan for $2 million dollars. This was considered a huge investment at that time because it included all of what is now Temple Terrace as well as parts of Sanford and Hialeah to the south and east. Kapp and Armstrong then built what became known as "The Palace" on their property which still stands today - an old mansion with dozens of bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, four stories high with grandiose ceilings). In 1928-9 three local entrepreneurs - Harry Weems (a grocery store owner), Sam Silverman (a plumber), and Barney Pinellis (an attorney) - pooled their money to buy 1,000 acres (500 hectares) around what is now Lake Worth Boulevard north of Temple Terrace for $5 million dollars - making it the largest purchase ever made in Polk County history. This allowed them to build one of America's earliest suburbs: Crystal Beach on its current site just north of Interstate 495/Upper Arlington Road across from Palm Beach International Airport
