Titusville was born in 1856 as the second town in Marion County, Florida. It became a community in 1872 when the first post office was established there. The name of the town comes from Colonel John Titus, who owned land there and donated it to the county. In 1916, Titusville was renamed for General George Custer after his death in battle at Little Bighorn.

The racial composition has changed little since 2000 according to Census data: At least 5 years ago only about 7 percent of residents were black or African American but that number now includes almost all races living within city limits—95 percent white Hispanic/Latino live among their own families with no other Hispanics or Latinos living nearby—a trend that began moving away from large Afro-Caribbean majorities long ago when most new immigrants arrived as Americans rather than through intermarriage with natives who had been born hereabouts."

In 1925, when Titusville became an incorporated municipality, it annexed the neighboring communities of Myers Park and Spring Hill. Titusville has been home to several important businesses and individuals: Dr. J.B. Sauer (a physician who developed Sauer bars), James Wertheimer (founder of Wertheimer Paper Company), Roy Cagle (the founder of Cagle's Barbecue) and others who made Titusville into one of the major food production towns in Florida during the early 21st century; as well as numerous military installations including Fort Walton Beach Army Base and Camp Blanding before it closed in 2003 and eventually replaced by Eglin Air Force Base
Titusville is located in Brevard County, Florida and was originally settled by the Seminoles. The community was named for General Titus O'Neill, who served as military governor of Florida during the Seminole Wars. In 1836, the town was chartered as a city by Governor John C. Calhoun. The city's first mayor was Wm. H. Barnes. In 1855, it became a state capital when Florida become an independent country.
