Titusville is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 67,814. The harbor and its docks have been a busy trade center for centuries with shipping coming and going from both the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. In 1896, Titusville acquired land on which it stands today including what is now downtown. It was named after Titus Munson, an American sailor who helped found Miami in 1795. The first ship to dock at the harbor was the brig "Munson" on October 24th 1892 by Captains Edward P. White and Cornelius Vanderbilt III of New York City. In 1902, builders began work on what would become JF Drake Wharf which became one of the world’s largest wharves when it opened in 1903. The wharf allowed ships up to 146 feet (45 meters) long to berth at once while also accommodating larger vessels such as tankships and liners up to 247 feet (75 meters) long or more than twice the length of any other American port at that time. In 1916, Captain Wm Copley built USS Constitution Museum which served as a training depot for naval officers during World War I before being decommissioned and sold to private owners in 1922. Titusville was founded by the Titus family in 1871. The town was named for Titus Welles, an American politician who served as United States Secretary of State from 1941 to 1944. The Welles family lived in the town until their death in 1951. In 1927, the first post office in Titusville opened and remained open until 1957. The town was annexed by Lakeland in 1959, and has since been a part of that city. As of 2000, the population of Titusville was approximately 484 people. The first settlers to live in what is now Titusville were farmers who arrived around 1851. By 1870, there were over 20 families living in the town and it had a population of about 100 people. At this time, most of the settlers were from Massachusetts or New York City. Over time, however, many local residents moved to become farmers or ranchers themselves and continued to reside in the community until its annexation by Lakeland in 1959. In 1925, while still residing within Lakeland, the Welles family donated land to create a park called Welles Park onproperty they owned near where today's Town Center stands. This gift helped start what would become one of Titusville's most popular activities - playing baseball against other townships across neighboring counties during summer months (known as "Titus League"). Today, Welles Park remains one of the most popular destinations for tourists and locals alike because it contains several dozen acres of beautiful parkland with games fields and playgrounds for children throughout summer months as well as winter months when snow falls).
