Titusville is located in Pinellas County, Florida and has a history of being a military town. The first military installation in Titusville was Fort Brooke on the former site of what is now the Naval Air Station Clearwater. This fort was built to protect Tampa Bay from Spanish pirates and it served as a training ground for naval officers and troops from throughout Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. In 1907, Titusville became home to Camp Polk which served as an artillery battery during World War I. The armament included 18-pounders and 4-inch guns, which were used to shell German trenches near Tampa. In 1917, Camp Polk was renamed Fort Brooke after General John T. Brodie who commanded American forces during World War I. For much of its history, Fort Brooke served as headquarters for the 5th Infantry Division stationed in Florida before becoming operational at nearby MacDill Air Force Base in 1934. In 1942, Fort Brooke became operational as Red Beach Army Corps Headquarters during World War II and later became known as White House Military barracks before finally becoming derelict in 1960. In 1966, portions ofFort Brooke were donated to Titusville by then Mayor Joe Biden who reopened it as an Exploratorium museum dedicated to military culture and technology with exhibits on weapons development including WWI machine gunners and WWII fighter pilots. The Exploratorium also operates the world's largest collection of model tanks dating back to the 1920s including some that have been restored! Today, Fort Brooke is open every day except Thanksgiving Day from 9am-5pm while White House Military Barracks remains closed Mondays through Fridays 10am-4pm due to historical significance; however visitors are able to visit both facilities without charge! The currentmilitary installation in Titusville is Pensacola Marine Corps Base which opened on November 15th 2006 after being mothballed at Goodfellow AFB since 2002. Since its opening Pad B can handle up TO 25000 passengers/year - making it one of the most popular tourist destinations aboard US Naval vessels worldwide – Terminal C has become one giant waterpark serving Sailors/Marines/Reservists/ Families OF ALL ages!!!
