Titusville is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by pioneers in 1836 and named for Titus "the Elder" Eaton, an American Revolutionary War veteran and delegate to the Constitutional Convention that framed the United States Constitution. The first store in town was built by Andrew Jenson in 1838 on Tenth Street and Main Street. Titusville experienced growth from its early days as a farming community with one-room stores and moral turpitude until it became a busy commercial center with new transportation links during the 19th century due to its location on U.S. 98 between Jacksonville and St Petersburg. By 1900, Titusville had become known as America's "Gateway to Daytona Beach." During World War II, Titusville served as an airfield for military operations in both Europe and South Asia before becoming a civilian community once again following the war's end. Titusville is a small town in Sumter County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Titusville is one of several towns in the county that are home to the University of Central Florida and its adjoining campuses including USF Bulls basketball and football programs. The university's campus stretches from downtown to I-95 just south of Titusville, making it one of the most heavily traveled areas in the region. The town itself was first settled by Germans in 1851. A post office was established here on March 11, 1852, and remained in operation until November 9, 1865. In 1860, land was purchased at what is now Broadway and Cass streets for $2 per acre (1/8 mile²). The original store operated on Cass Street before being moved to Broadway in 1868. By 1870 there were twenty four businesses located along Cass Avenue between Market and Peachtree Streets; a two story brick school building completed that year served as a public school until 1914 when it became known as "The Normal School". In 1915 a windmill was built on State Road 7 near present day Cantrell Boulevard which powerned local sawmills until 1922 when an electric mill became available nearby on Cantrell Boulevard. By 1927 there were sixty three businesses operating along Cass Avenue with seventy six residents living within walking distance of either market or Peachtree Streets; by 1930 all but two businesses had closed down due to consolidation into larger stores or other new developments popping up around town; however five remain today: One Antique Store (since 1924), Post Office (1927), Masonic Lodge #5 (since 1916), First National Bank & Trust Company (1928) and Patterson's Flowers Department Store (opened 1925). As early as 1911 there were discussions about reopening Floridas oldest telegraph line from St Petersburg via Titusville providing service to both Jacksonville and Pensacola; however no action occurred until 1928 when state legislators passed Senate Bill 5 which authorized Florida East Coast Railroad Co./Florida Southern Railway Co./ bankrupted Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Co./to reopen Floridas oldest telegraph line from St Petersburg via Titusville! This allowed for direct communication between Jacksonville and Pensacola bypassing Sumter County! This new connection allowed travelers who journeyed through Sumter County during those years to avoid having their journey interrupted by traffic travelling through Titusville en route to or from Jacksonville or Pensacola! At its peak this line carried over 1 million passengers each month! In 1933 construction began on what would become UCEF's Main Campus located adjacent to present day Cantrell Boulevard across I-95 from downtown Titusville; this massive project included construction of a new library building addition(s) as well as student dormitories(s)). As soon as completion came though students experienced overcrowding so much so that UCEF leased portion(s) of Curtis Field north Stadium Drive where they currently operate administrative offices today! Today’s Main Campus still hosts many popular events such as concerts featuring popular music artists throughout the year!
