Venice, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. Venice was founded in 1892 by Italian American immigrant Luigi Venditti and his wife Angelina. The Vendittis were the first Italians to settle in the area. Venice had a population of just over 100 people when it was founded. In 1912, Venice moved from its original location on the east side of Venice Island to its current location on the west side of Venice Island. The move was made because of the presence of an airfield at what is now Joint Base Andrews which served as a major obstacle to trade and commerce between Italy and America during World War I. The town's history can be traced back to 1892 when Luigi Venditti and his wife Angelina settled in Polk County after moving from Rome, Italy. They set up shop near what is now known as Joint Base Andrews Air Force Base where they sold vegetables and other goods to soldiers stationed there during World War I. It wasn't until 1924 that Venice began limited construction of a schoolhouse which would serve as their community center until it was completed in 1928. That year also marked the opening of their own grocery store which still stands today across from their old Community Hall building on Venice Island. In 1942, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan occupied Venetian Islands including Venice proper with its population numbering only about 100 people at that time due to very tight restrictions placed upon Japanese citizens living within European boundaries during World War II (see Japanese Internment Camps for more information). Following Japan's surrender, all Japanese residents were deported without any form of compensation oration from either Italy or America; only those who choseimar exile were allowed some semblance of return home (see ruse Operation Overlord). As part of this process, many Italian Americans living within Axis-occupied Europe were forced into service as slave laborers throughout 1945-1946 under various terms and conditions devised by Allied forces pursuant to Project Paperclip (see Nazi Doctors’ Plot).
