The history of the U.S. Army in Venice, Florida date back to World War I when American forces were first stationed there as part of the Military Mission to Italy. In 1922, Gen. John J Pershing became Commander-in-Chief of all American Forces in Europe and ordered an increase in the number of troops stationed in Venice due to its strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico between Tampa and Miami. The military installation at Camp McCoy was built adjacent to what is now known as Beach Boulevard and was named for General Pershing’s father, who had also served in World War I and been decorated with the Medal of Honor. In 1934, Camp McCoy was redesignated Fort Casey after Major General James W Casey assumed command from General Pershing. The fort was enlarged and additional barracks were constructed including a dispensary, mess hall and officers’ quarters which can still be seen today on Market Street near the old post office building where soldiers used to stop for lunch during their deployments around town. Fort Casey served as a training ground for both United States Marine Corps units deploying into combat during World War II before being decommissioned following that conflict. It wasn’t until 1949 that Fort Casey again saw action when it became activated as an armory for the Venice Police Department after having been closed by orders of Mayor Joe Carollo because he felt that it would be used more frivolously than militarily. Eventually, police activity at Fort Casey diminished and it was reverted back to an armory upon its closure in 1973). Although no longer active within our military community, Fort Casey continues to hold a special place within Venice history as one of America’s earliest military installations west of the Mississippi River!

The population was 24,605 at the 2010 census. Venice is one of two towns in Miami-Dade County that were not incorporated until after 2000. The other town is Brickell. The name Venice comes from the Venetian language meaning "milk." At first only a few people lived in Venice because it was a small fishing village on the mouth of the Miami River. But as time passed and more people moved to Venice, businesses started to form and soon there were many homes and businesses. By 1920, Venice had become a large city with over 100 residents. In 1932, Venice annexed part ofMiami Beach which made it an even larger city with over 250 residents. However, due to its size and lack of infrastructure, Venice never grew very much beyond its early years as a small fishing village until 1990 when it became an annex for Miami Beach again after voter approval through referendum On January 1st 1990 both towns amalgamated into one municipality under the name "Venice" following ratification by voters in referendums held that year
