Venice, Florida is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,917 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton–Boca Raton metropolitan area. Venice was founded in 1892 by Italian immigrants as a small town on the Santa Fe Railroad line between Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach. After railroads were pulled out ofFlorida in the 1920s, Venice became an agricultural community with lime production being its primary industry until it began to experience rapid growth due to new development around it after World War II. In 1969, developer George Hargrave anchored one of several phases of urban expansion throughout Escambia County by creating Venice as one of two planned cities on land that he had acquired adjacent to his Agriculture Development Center south of Interstate 10 and west of Highway 82 (the present day I-10/Highway 82 junction). The first phase saw Hargrave rename Venice from "Casa di Mirta" - meaning "House of Moses" - to "Venice". This phase also saw completion of a number of streets and some key infrastructure such as power and water lines; both public works projects which continue to this day. Phase Two brought about aggressive development including the construction of large shopping malls along Interstate 10 as well as numerous houses for wealthy residents and businesses who desired close proximity to downtown Pensacola without all the traffic noise typical in larger coastal cities like Jacksonville or Tampa Bay. Today's Venice has evolved into a thriving community composed mostlyof retirees living alone near retirement communities or nearby golf courses while young families live within walking distance for groceries and other basic needs such as schools, healthcare, etc., thereby providing another layerof security against possible economic insecurity caused by global recession or other regional factors beyond their control
