Venice, Florida is a small town located in Duval County, Florida. It was founded by the family of Captain John Smith in 1821 as Venice Plantation. The village grew rapidly during the post-World War II boom and has since become one of the most vibrant communities inDuval County. The community's unique history can be found within its military community. Venice was once home to two United States Marine battalions stationed there from 1944-1945. These units were part of Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to reclaim Burma from Japanese occupation. Today, Venice contains two museums: one dedicated to World War II memorabilia and another focused on local Venetian art and culture. The first military presence in Venice began withCaptain John Smith's expedition that landed on the island of Cuba in 1821. After spending several months exploring this strange new land, they discovered that it was uninhabited and decided to settle here permanently. This decision would later prove fateful as Venice became one of America's earliest naval ports and received many supplies from American vessels sailing up the Florida Keys trade route. As Venice grew more influential politically and economically, it came into contact with other European powers - England included - who wanted access to its resources and citizens." By 1830, Venice had become a leading commercial center on Tampa Bay."In 1850", Captain James Loyd’s squadron consisting of six ships reached Tampa Bay after a journey lasting 527 days."This squadron consisted of HMS Eudyptes (1849), HMS Scylla (1850), HMS Cinque Ports (1851), HMS Pinafore (1852) & HMAS Melbourne (1853)."During these years [of] Spanish control over Tampa Bay...the only ship not under Spanish jurisdiction was HMS Eudyptes." Venice, Fla. is a small town in Polk County, Fla., on the eastern side of the Gulf of Mexico. It was founded in 1853 by Italian immigrants as a fishing and farming village, named after Venice, Italy. The first settlers were Italians who came from Arezzo, Italy. In 1854, they organized themselves into a society called "Casa dei Turchi" to purchase land west of Venice for farming purposes and built what is now known as the Old Village Store on Depot Street. The store was destroyed by fire in 1861 but has been replaced several times since then with varying architecture and names including the Venetian Theatre on Main Street (now home to Renaissance Hall). In 1886, Venice became a city with its own government when it gained incorporation from a series of separate villages that had formed around it. Today, there are five wards in which Venice operates: North Beach/Downtown; South Beach/East Side; Marine Drive; West Side/Zigzag corridors; and Canalside/. In addition to its municipal services such as waste disposal and zoning enforcement, Venice also provides law enforcement for the cities of Tampa Bay and St Petersburg through its police department detachment known as Task Force Venice-St Petersburg (TFVP). In 1821, Venice became a town after it was selected as the site for a new courthouse. By 1830, the population of Venice had grown to over 500 people. The town government changed hands many times until it was finally passed down to a board of commissioners in 1857. In 1893, Venice became an incorporated city and has since been growing steadily with its current population of around 10,000 residents.
