The navy has a long and colorful history in Venice, Florida. The city is home to the USS Constitution Museum and the USS Florida (CG 55) Museum, both of which are dedicated to exposing the navy's maritime heritage. In 1854, Commodore James Fenton sailed his ship, the Constitution, from Portsmouth, England on a visit to Venice. He took possession of the old arsenal and dockyard there and named it Fort Fenton after himself. The navy presence in Venice increased with the arrival of HMS Hampshire in 1875. This British warship was used as a policing vessel for commerce along the Venetian lagoons. HMS Hampshire also served as an aid to naval exercises off Venice harbor. Cabrini Point became one of many Pearl Harbor-like sites used by US forces during World War II. From 1942-1945, USS Arizona (LPH 3) patrolled near Cabrini Point while Japanese submarines conducted raids against Allied shipping in order to disrupt supplies reaching ships at Taranto and other points along Italy's coastline. In 1945, USS San Diego (CA 14), anchored at Cabrini Point when she became aware that Japan had surrendered unconditionally following its atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After World War II ended,USS Constitution Museum Director David Sieving chronicled Navy activity in Venice through photographs, videos, oral histories and artifacts housed inside the museum’s exhibit hall throughout his tenure from 1978 until his retirement in 2002*1*. During this time period*,2*, Commodore James Fenton’s America was moored adjacent to Cabrini Point where more than 1 million Sailors - American sailors who had fought for their country during World War II - gathered for Victory Day paradesides contests4*5*. It was here that Sailors donated their uniforms so that these displays could be preserved*6*. Sailors also donated food parcels4*7*, toys4*8*, clothing4*9*10*11†††††‡‡‡ but most importantly they gave back something special: Their time away from home – their experiences during wartime.*12 *13 †14 †15 †16 *17

Venice, Florida is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. Venice is located on State Road 847 and has a total area of . The first European settlement in what is now Venice was made by Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1565 as part of his claim to thebroward coast after capturing Fort Caroline from the Spanish during their pepper trade war. He named it "Riva delle Gorgonie" (Gorge River). In 1835, the Miami and Erie Railroad reached Venice and began carrying passengers and freight. By 1840, there were three hotels in town; one operated by J.P. Morgan and Brothers, another by Nicholas Veneziano and Company, and still another by John Davenport & Sons. There were also two stores, four cottages for rent, two Methodist churches (one originally built as an Episcopal church), three schools—grades one through twelve—and a post office which opened on December 12th of that year. The first hotel in Venice was built on State Road 847 opposite where present-day Venetian Village stands today by noted architect John Larkin with help from brother Nicholas Veneziano Venerdì nightlife began revolving around local speakeasies clustered around each other along Broadway near Government Center while much of South Beach remained undeveloped except for some homes along Lincoln Boulevard between Vine Street/University Drive and Flagler Street/. Many entrepreneurs had started businesses catering to this $5-$10 limit crowd such as Al Capone’s gambling house calledoddfellows (), Prohibition-era speakeasy Bodega Bueno (), dance hall Panama-Pacifica (). Italian immigrants who had brought their artisans fleeing Piedmont rich soil founded several hundred small businesses throughout south Florida during prohibition years (). Doing business under names like the Golden Fleece Tavern (), Patriotic Inn (), Golden Nugget Casino () or simply The Gambling House () these entrepreneurs competed against oneanother to become “the man” or “the queen” among their peers within certain social circles who patronized these establishments during prohibition days when alcohol could only be bought at state licensed stores
