Venice, Florida is a city located in the Miami-Dade County region of southern Florida. The population was 792 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in Miami-Dade County afterMiami. Venice's nickname is "The Venice of the South" because of its rich history and architecture dating back to 1857. The first police officer in Venice was appointed on December 3, 1857. The first salt water police force was established on February 6, 1865. By 1886, there were six patrol officers sworn by Governor Manuel López de Santa Anna with jurisdiction over all of Venice Township and two precincts withinbounding that township. On May 1, 1902, Mayor John Mclntyre designated Venice as a consolidated town under the control of both county commissioners and mayor. Within one year following incorporation into Miami-Dade County on January 15, 1903 (the date supervised by City Manager Lorenzo Dow), VENICE had seven fulltime law enforcement officers and an additional three part time officers assigned to support emergency services; however this number dwindled very quickly as more businesses opened up and more people moved into Venice during those years leading up to World War II when crime rates soared across Miami-Dade County due to large influxes of refugees from Europe during that war.
