The Coffee Room was located on State Road 2A and served coffee from local roasters such as Peet's and Dutch Bros. At the time, it was one of the only businesses in town that sold specialty coffee. In 1979, Julie's Gourmet Coffee opened its doors and became a full-service coffee house with a variety of pastries, sandwiches, salads and desserts. Julie's is still in business today and serves up some of Florida's best coffee.

The city first developed on the shore of the Intracoastal Waterway in the late 1800s and it soon became a major center for commerce and culture. In 1957, Vero Beach was made an official port town and it has since become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida. The city also has a rich cultural history that can be found throughout its institutions and businesses. The first inhabitants of Vero Beach were Native Americans who lived near what is now downtown Vero Beach. In 1802, Spanish traders arrived in search of salt water ports on the Gulf Coast and they discovered an area that would later become Vero Beach. By 1815, English colonists had established a settlement at what is now downtown Vero Beach and they began to trade with Native Americans, selling goods such as clothing, supplies, foodstuffs and munitions. The first reference to VeroBeach was made in 1788 when Captain James Cook visited Pensacola Bay during his voyage along the Florida coast. Cook noted that there was “a small island [near] this bay” which he called “Verbice” because large pieces of coral lay upon its surface (Tucker). By 1800, some local fishermen were beginning to commercialize their catches by shipping them downriver to Mobile Bay where they were processed into goods such as soapstone and candles (Fischer). This led to increased traffic on the Intracoastal Waterway which caused problems for local merchants who could not afford to build additional ships or dockyards (Lamkin). With growth came development however; before long buildings could be seen dotting both sides of Fort Myers Creek where today’s Courthouse stands (Kleinich/Boydston). Within minutes of Captain Cook's landfall in 1788, members from his ship HMS Discovery set ashore at Fort Myers Creek with intentions of exploring Pensacola Bay further south than any other European vessel had ever done before (Discovery Museum website). However due to bad weather conditions they only explored 5 miles offshore before returning home without finding anything valuable (Cook Museum website). It wasn't until 1802 when gold seekers discovered red manganese ore near present-day Verozee Point that attention started being paid to this region around Pensacola Bay(Norman/Petersen). After years of exploration no significantuggets were found so interest waned but within five years another group led by John Thomson decided this was worth drilling for gold(Thomson Museum website) so investment resumed(Thomson Museum website). A wharf was built at present-day Fort Myers Cove in 1821 after many failed attempts by different entrepreneurs including George Vanderbilt Rogers(Rogers Museum website). Unfortunately whennews spread about Vanderbilt's investment those who invested lost all their money making him bankrupt(Museum Website)). Commodore John DickeyOrdered Commodore Rogers not invest further money in hopes he would find more success((Dickey Memorial Library)). Eventually Dickey ordered another wharf built at deeperwater nearby Stonington Harbor((Stonington Harbor Municipal Utilities Authority)). In 1827 Henry de la Beche landed his brigantine La Salle east side fort Myers creek with 102 men seeking passage westward across Tampa bay hurricane season.( De la Beche House museum ). German settlers continued moving into this area until 1893 when all Germans except six families left following annexation into United States.(Google Street View image) In 1905 two brothers - Harry Jaffe Sr., Harry Jaffe Jr., founded First National Bank anchored off Southwest cornerof Fort Myers Blvd & Second Ave.(Jaffe family history archives)(Deerfield Historical Society website)(First National Bank building photo circa 1905) On July 1 1908 Jacksonville annexed Vero Beaches ((Jacksonville Journal article dated 7/1/08)) From then until 1912 there never been any organized efforts by either county government or business people tryingto get rid Of Itchyfingers Racecourse ((National Park Service brochure from 1915))) Although race track activity stopped shortly after annexation several businesses still kept horses stabled inside until 1972((Volusia County Sheriff's Office records)) In 1916 construction began on Lockwood Navy Yard adjacent to present day Veterans Hospital complex ((Lockwood Naval Shipyard web page)) There have been numerous expansions over time including: An addtionnel two story building added in 1961 called Watergate annexe((VeroBeach Chamber of Commerce Building photo circa 1961)),the largest shopping mall ever built - Palm Springs Plaza (( Palm Springs Plaza Developers company web page )) currently filled with high end shops,, multiplex theater,, function rooms etc…..A new harbor completed in 1993 called Deepwater Harbour allows vessels upto 45 feet long corvette or larger plus associated equipment launchbayand berths at deepwater pier opposite lockwood naval shipyard . Finally lastly hospital expansion project - Vista del Mar Pavilion complete 2002 adding nearly 350 beds (+50 operating room beds), three restaurants,, health clubnasium,, spa,,,,golf course etc…. The area now known as Vero Beach was first populated by the Timucua people. The Timucua were a Native American tribe that lived in what is now eastern Florida. They left the area around 800 BC and moved to what is now central Florida. By 300 AD, the Timucua had disappeared from the area, but their customs and language continue to be spoken today among some of the Pascagoula-speaking Seminole Tribe in Georgia and Alabama. In 1492, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded Puerto Rico on what is now Sarasota County, Florida. In 1565, Juan Ponce de León landed on this coast and claimed it for Spain. After Spanish America was divided into two parts in 1648, Vero Beach became part of British Honduras until 1783 when it became part of Spanish Province of St Augustine. In 1821, it was renamed for General Andrew Jackson who served as its first U.S. president and helped make Florida a state.
