The history of Vero Beach, Florida dates back to the early 1800s. At that time, this small town was connected to the mainland by a wooden bridge. The first settlers in Vero Beach were surveyors who began moving into the area in the late 1820s. By 1830, Vero Beach had a population of around 100 people and consisted of just six homes. However, over time, Vero Beach’s growth accelerated and by 1850 it boasted a population of 500 people. The first post office was established in Vero Beach in 1858 and soon after, a public school was built. In 1863, local citizens created the town’s first fire department which helped prevent several fires from happening in the town. The public library opened its doors in 1868 and soon afterwards, a hospital was constructed on land donated by Mrs Lavinia Cook. In 1870, another church was built and within two years, there were also two stores and four residences located in the community. In 1879, an addition to the townhall complex was added which included a jail and a school for children called “Evelyn” after Mrs Cook’s daughter. In 1886-87 (the year Vero Beach became part of Stonington), work began on building what is now known as Town Hall Square which would later house City Hall and many other businesses including banks and restaurants over time. VeraBeach continued to grow rapidly during World War II with many residents enlisting in service or joining forces with local organizations such as The American Legion or The United States Coast Guard. Unfortunately for VeraBeachians during World War II their efforts didn’t lead to much success as enemy troops invaded their territory numerous times but despite this attack only one person lost their life during hostilities – an Italian soldier who died while trying to cross into America from Europe at Haines Key Naval Station
The town of Vero Beach,Florida was founded in 1922 by Captain John L. Flagler and his family. The original town was located on the present-day site of Sebastian Key. With its main street, Fourth Street, running parallel to the Gulf of Mexico, it quickly became a popular tourist spot for visitors from all over the world. The flagler family soon developed a large shipyard on the northern part of Sebastian Key which served as the primary source of supply for their ships and boats touring the Florida Keys. In 1926, Captain Flagler donated land to create what is now known as "Flagler's Causeway" which connected Vero Beach with nearby Miracle Mile. From here tourists could take in all that South Florida had to offer including beautiful beaches, dramatic sunsets and otherworldly experiences. In 1970, Flagler's Causeway was renamed after him in recognition of his contributions to Vero Beach and surrounding communities.
