Vero Beach, Florida is a small town in the state of Florida. The population was 7,872 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the mouth of the Suwannee River and is bordered by the counties of Sumter, Broward, and Palm Beach. It is known for its surfing beaches and its annual Vero Beach Surf Festival which takes place in early November. The area that now makes up Vero Beach was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1500s. In 1832, an Englishman named John Cranch bought land from the Seminoles near what is now Vero BEACH Municipal Pier. He named his new community "Vero" after his wife's native country, India. From here he developed a profitable trade bringing goods to Cuba from Africa and other parts of South America; he also built a series of cotton plantations in this part of Florida. By 1830, he had become one of Jacksonville's wealthiest men. In 1853, Jervis Buchanan created Vero City from portions of Winter Garden and Jacksonville to provide more local self-government within Jacksonville County while still allowing merchants to do business with their counterparts throughout Southwest Florida including Pensacola and Mobile Bayous (now Alabama). At this time Jacksonville was already home to some 2 million people making it one of America's largest cities at that point - it would grow even larger over time! The city hall building on Broadway became known as "Buchanan's Castle". A year later, Buchanan purchased about 120 acres (48 hectares) north along Third Street between State Road 527A/Upper Suwannee River Bridge (now US 1) and State Road 527B/Pine Ridge Rd., used as grazing land for cattle owned by his brother-in-law Major General Gideon Welles during Reconstruction years following the American Civil War ended with victory for Union forces over Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House on April 9 1865. Buchanan donated this property - now known as "Buchanan Park" - to Jacksonville County for use as a county park starting in 1892...thus giving birth to what would become downtown Jacksonville! In 1903 another Englishman named Harry Perkins arrived in Vero Beach with his family when he took control of a failed sugar plantation called Pinecrest Plantation near present day Apalachicola Avenue/US 90 southbound off I-95 southbound exit #1 just past mile marker 24 on Highway 13A eastbound traffic side just before reaching Indian Springs Resort & Casino located today at mile marker 26 on Highway 13E between Indian Springs Resort & Casino & Stinson Beach Boulevard/US 95 eastbound traffic side approximately 2 miles west from Hutchinson Island Wildlife Preserve located today at mile marker 29 on US 95 southbound access road adjacent to Stinson Beach Boulevard just past mile marker 31 Ocean Drive
