The first settlers in what would become Vero Beach were African Americans who came from Mobile, Alabama looking for work on the construction sites near Ft. Lauderdale during the early 1800s. By 1892, white men also had arrived in what is now Vero Beach and began to build homes. One such home was built by Samuel Pritchett for $1,500 dollars cash with five acres (20 hectares). This initial settlement could only support a small number of people because it was close to water resources which were especially important at this time because sugar cane was being developed as a commercial crop in South Florida. In 1902, land around present day downtown Vero Beach was purchased by Jules Ferry for $10 an acre from John Singer Sargent and his brother Alfred Pierpont Ferry who owned nearby Key Biscayne Island. The ferry landing at Government Pier allowed goods coming into or leaving Miami Harbor to be unloaded there instead of having them transported downriver all the way to Fort Myers where they were then boxed up and sold off as additional cargo on sailing vessels called “ packets ” between Havana and Key West until 1915 when a new port opened called PortMiami that eliminated sailboat traffic from flowing through Fort Myers so goods could finally be unloaded at one place rather than being trucked downriver each time! Ferry Landing also served as an overflow dock during times when both Government Pier and Miami Dade Causeway weren’t giving enough space for cargo due to high tides or high winds! As more people moved into what would become Vero Beach, less land became available for farming so potatoes became the mainstay food product here until after World War II when citrus started becoming popular again because it couldn’t be grown near salt water like potatoes could! With better transportation options available today following Hurricane Irma (a Category 5 hurricane), fishing has become increasingly important here too as has tourism - particularly beachfront vacation rentals! Today there are over 60 businesses that provide services within walking distance of downtown including many that service both locals/residents as well as visitors!
