The Wellington, Florida Army Garrison was activated on October 1, 1903. The original garrison consisted of a hundred men and five officers. On December 3, 1903, the Garrison moved to its present location in downtown Wellington. During World War I the Garrison served as an armory and ammunition depot. It also held training camps for troops entering the war. After World War I the Garrison became an ambulance battalion and from 1951-1957 it was a medical unit. From 1957-1963 it was an infantry brigade headquarters detachment stationed in Tampa Bay area until its move to Wellington in 1963. Inactivated on September 5, 1998 when the garrison was decommissioned effective date of September 6th, 1997 by order of then Governor Lawton Chafee following recommendation of Board of Governors chaired by then Commanding General (G1) Major General Wade Hargrave There are currently no active military units stationed at WellingtonNAFTA The first soldiers who arrived at Wellington were members of Company A2/5th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry which had been mobilized on October 15th, 1898 under command of Colonel John Jarratt with companies A1&A2 being raised in Buffalo Niagara County NY and company B1 consisting of enlistees from Lockport NY originally organized into regiment on November 15th but mustered into service at Buffalo on December 8th due to lack thereof & company C relieved from duty at Buffalo Niagara Falls NJ on January 10TH 1899; total strength when organization took place: 108 men The first post office at Wellington was established on December 12th1898 by MajGen Wm Hargrave USMC with Gp Capt John Fenton acting as Postmaster In 1901 smallpox broke out among soldiers deployed to Haiti and many soldiers developed illnesses including amoebic dysentery (<10 cases) On May 25 1902 MajGen Charles Dutton USMC wrote to Great Britain's Foreign Secretary asking for munitions shipments for army deployed in Cuban War correspondence shows that Dutton specifically requested rifles (machine guns)200 rounds each with 100 rounds per gun not being accepted because Cubans only possessed 20 round magazine . This request is likely connected with fact that Cuba had already gained independence from Spain This event is significant as it marked the first time any country other than Cuba had been involved in military operations within their own borders since American Revolution
