The Wellington, Florida Army National Guard Garrison was established in 1942 when the United States Army moved its headquarters from Mobile, Alabama to Fort Myers. The garrison consisted of a detachment of the 5th Infantry Regiment and two companies of the 10th Infantry Regiment. In 1945, the US Army withdrew from mainland America and all military units were disbanded except for the 5th Infantry Regiment which became part of the Florida National Guard. In 1978, following a request by then-Governor Clements, an infantry battalion (the 4th Battalion) was activated and stationed at Fort Walton Beach where it remained until 1990 when it merged with another battalion to form the current regiment. Since then, there have been numerous changes to troop strength with only one battalion active at any given time. Today, there are over 2200 soldiers assigned to the Wellington Garrison as part of various branches of service including: cavalry; infantry; artillery; marine corps aviation; coast guard; law enforcement organizations such as corrections officers and jail guards; search and rescue services; electrical power plants providing essential gridlock relief during hurricanes or other natural disasters.

Wellington is a census-designated place in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,611 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Wellington was founded in 1892 by J.L. Weller and named for Sir John Young Wellington, 1st Viscount Wellesley. The first post office at Wellington was established on November 15, 1893. The town acquired its current name on February 3, 1896 when the first telegraph line from Tampa to Jacksonville passed through it and named it after then-British Prime Minister Arthur Balfour Weller's father-in-law, Lord John Young Wellsworth. As with many small towns in Polk County during this time period (due to lack of railroad service), local citizens developed their own businesses and services that still survive today such as grocery stores (Cascade), banks (First National Bank), sawmills (Wright Brothers Mills), blacksmiths (Dixon) and veterinarians (Drury).
