Wellington is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Wellington was founded in 1853 by Captain John Sutherlin and his family as a school for white children on the banks of the Anaconda River. The town was named after George Washington's first vice president, Arthur Wellesley. The original courthouse and jail were destroyed by fire in 1858; but a new courthouse and jail were built on Park Boulevard in 1865. In 1869, Wellington became a city with its own government and an police department. In 1914, it merged with nearby Jacksonville to become one municipality under the name of Jacksonville-Wellington Municipal Union. In 1969, Wellington began to experience high levels of traffic congestion due to its location near Interstate 95 and US Highway 90 (I-95), which made it difficult for residents to get around without cars or buses. To improve access to education and shopping opportunities for locals, the city council voted in 1971 to annex what is now Pinellas County into the municipality; this made Wellington one of three municipalities within Polk County that did not already have countywide services available (the others being Live Oak and Dunedin).
