Wellington, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wellington is a small town with a large university campus and it has been reported that there are more people living in Wellington than any other community in Monroe County. The first settler in Wellington was John Wesley Adams who arrived on July 6, 1836. The town was laid out by J.B. Hinds on April 12, 1838 and named for General Sir Henry Clinton Wellesley (1795-1865). On May 24, 1839 Phebe Eaton married Gilbert Hoadley from Portsmouth Downs in Wellington and they founded the first house of worship in the community—the First Presbyterian Church which still stands today on North Main Street. In 1840 two men named John Green were also arrivals to the community; one as an employee of Daniel Boone for cutting timber near present day Orange Blossom Trail and another as manager of a store located along what is now Colonial Drive SE. In 1841 three more settlers came; Wm Fenton from Georgia who had found land on Indian Key SW and James Aiken from Virginia who had homesteaded near present day White Sands Boulevard NE corner Lake Worth Road NW In 1845 four more settlers came including Willis Capps from Georgia who had come overland through Mobile Bay to Jacksonville Landing after being lost at sea while hunting red deer off Big Pine Key SW One result of this increasing population was an increase in infrastructure development such as schools, churches and stores being built or renovated such as the first Masonic Lodge erected in America west of Miami – The Grand Lodge No 3 hall now used by Trinity Episcopal School Thereafter many businesses within Wellington prospered thanks to cheap labor available across South Florida during this time period especially because most white Americans were moving westward during this time seeking opportunities for economic growth . This included businesses like Armour & Co., salt mines operated by Elisha Peake & Co., cattle ranches run by Wm Burcham & Sons, electric Railway Company lines connecting towns throughout south central Florida with Jacksonville Landing . All these businesses brought about increased trade and commerce that helped drive prices down for goods bought local or grown local when compared to products sold away from town . Traffic through Waterloo Avenue actually increased during this period making it one of only two major arterial streets not controlled by US Railroads outside Tampa/St Petersburg

Wellington is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,047 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wellington was founded in 1851 by English-born residents of South Carolina and Georgia who had come to Florida as slaves. The first post office was established in Wellington on November 5, 1851. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period due to its strategic location on what was then known as Indian Lake, which led to its nickname "The Lake City." In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln ordered General James H. Wilson's brigade of Union soldiers under Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant to march into Polk County from Chattanooga to seize the vital cotton plantations north of Wellington and drive Confederate forces out of the county. On July 7, 1861, Wilson's brigade arrived at the village of Waterloo (now part of Jacksonville) and began their march eastward through Wellington towards Athens Plantation; they were met by Confederate cavalry under Colonel John Baterer with orders to prevent them from reaching Athens. After a brief skirmish near Waterloo Village, Wilson's brigade continued their march towards Athens; however, they were met again by Confederate cavalry under Colonel Robert Ewell Taylor about two miles south-west of Waterloo Village; this time Wilson's Brigade managed to retreat without being captured or killed. On October 10th 1865 Union troops attacked Confederate guns near Waterloo Village after nightfall in an effort tomLthe town before reinforcements could arrive; all but one gun remained unharmed and subsequent investigations found that no members of either army participated in this attack; it has been said that General Grant may have intended for this attack simply as a propaganda victory over Confederate morale given the defeat at Gettysburg five days earlier Aftermath The battle resulted in approximately 150 casualties for both sides with many more wounded or missing including 6 men who later died from their wounds while still being treated at hospitals in Tampa and Pensacola Fort Myers respectively Kingston also lost around 25 men killed or mortally wounded during the battle while other localities such as Clearwater saw an increase in slave trade activity following Union successes . In 1865 most Yankees left for home soon afterGettysburg ended but some stayed behind until1870 when most returned across US border
Wellington, Florida was founded in 1847 by James W. Wellington and family. The town was named for the British general and statesman John Wellington who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. The Wellingtons built a log cabin on a small stream that flowed through the community. In 1851, they opened a trading post in the town and began growing crops. In 1863, they built a sawmill that became one of the biggest in the area. The town experienced growth during the Civil War with soldiers coming to garrison Fort Donelson in Wellington. By 1865, the town had about 100 residents and was renamed Gainesville after Confederate General Robert Ewell's army passed through Gainesville on their way to Gettysburg. During Reconstruction, Gainesville became an important center for African Americans who worked in local businesses and schools
