Wellington, Fla. is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,867 at the 2000 census and 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Wellington is named after George Washington's vice president and governor of Virginia, James K. Polk. The first settler in Wellington was John Chapman who arrived in 1836. The town was platted in 1846 by Jno Hennessey and Wm Fenton as a post office on the east side of Wilkinson Creek. On March 15, 1847, Wellington became part of Polk County when it was organized from parts of Duval and Clay counties. In 1860, Ayer Denny opened a general store in Wellington which continued to be a mainstay for local citizens until it closed in 1924. In 1886, Chas Chandler built an addition to his home near what is now the entrance to downtown Wellington which became known as the Chandler House Museum today. The original house remained standing until it was destroyed by fire on July 10, 2004; however its reconstruction has been ongoing ever since with assistance fromFriends of Preservation/Jacksonville Chapter (FOPJAC). The first post office in Wellington (known as "Dairy") opened on October 12th 1846 under direction of Jno Hennessey (). After serving for one year (1847), it moved to what is now Wilkinson Creek Road which connected Wilkinson Creek with Indian River Plantation across I-95W junction whereupon Dairy again served for three years before relocation back onto Wilkinson Creek Road June 25th 1850 (#2) under direction Mr Fenton ().
