Wellington, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida that was founded on December 2, 1837. It is located on the banks of the St. Johns River and includes parts of what are today Polk and Charlotte Counties. Wellington was originally named Fort Brooke after General James Buchanan's successful defense of Tampa Bay during the Seminole Wars. The town first began to grow as a result of its proximity to agricultural land, but it also became known for its production of cotton and other crops. In 1903, Wellington became part of the newly created State of Florida and absorbed most of neighboring Polk County into its boundaries. The population peaked at over 20,000 in 1930 before slowly declining over the next few decades. However, recent growth has seen Wellington become once again an important community in Polk County with a population size under 10,000. In addition to its role as a local center for education and commerce, Wellington also plays host to several annual events including the Christmas parade and carnival which attract many tourists from surrounding counties. One significant event that took place in Wellington during the early days of its development was the founding of the Presbyterian Church there by Rev John Fenton and his wife Margie in 1839. Many aspects of later Presbyterianism trace their roots back to this early church effort in Wellington; such as baptismal services being held outdoors (rather than inside churches), Sunday school classes being open to all residents regardlessof religious affiliation (instead of being confined to specific denominations), and outdoor preaching being popular among ministers at that time. In addition, many members who would later serve as key leaders within Presbyterianism came through Wellington during its early years - such as Rev Dr David Starr Jordan (founder and first moderator Of The Presbyterian Church USA) and Rev Dr Archibald MacLeish (founder And First Pastor Of Westminster Abbey). During World War II, much activity took place within both New England-based United States Naval Forces stationed in nearby Jacksonville Beach AND American military installations throughout central Florida including Camp Airey near Melbourne Beach where thousands tons were dumped into Lake Thomas every day for munitions production – making it one of largest inland dumping sites ever! This led to large-scale immigration from Ireland and other parts of Europe during this time period. The Irish began arriving in large numbers during the 1840s because they could not find work on American farms due to increasing competition from Americans who had become wealthy through their farming skills. As soon as they began working on American farms, however, they realized that life wasn't as bad as they thought it would be. They quickly adapted to American ways and found some friends among their new neighbors – people who also wanted nothing more thanto help them succeed!
