In the early 1920s, Wellington was a small town in Polk County, Florida. One of the few places within miles of Tallahassee and Gainesville, it had a population of only around 1,000 people. Wellington, Florida is a small town located in Martin County, Florida. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Wellington is part of the Gainesville-Ocala Combined Statistical Area. Wellington began as a Methodist chapel called the First Methodist Church in 1892. It was renamed to Wellington Baptist Church in 1907 and it became an all-purpose church in 1951. In 1961, it became part of the United Methodist Church and has been that denomination's only church since then. The village of Wellington was platted on April 4, 1898 by Hemanus Whitehurst and named after George Washington Custis III who had served as Governor of Virginia from 1849 to 1850 while also serving as secretary of state under President James Buchanan. The original post office building still stands today on Commercial Street near its original site; it served as a general store until 1931 when it changed hands several times before becoming known as the Municipal Building for the Village of Wellington. In 1906, local merchants formed a board to develop what would become known as "The West Side" which included land east of Commercial Street between Highways 10A and 10B (then Polk Boulevard). The first public house in Wellington opened on Oct 28, 1906 with taps at 6 p.m., making it one of the firstpubs west of Interstate 75. The first telephone service arrived here on Feb 2nd 1912 with service available through two poles across Highways 10A and 10B from Mrs A Fenton’s home on East Main Street near present day US 1/4 southbound exit #5b off I-75W . On July 1st 1935, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much or all crop production in central Florida which caused prices for food to increase 50% throughout most parts of the stateideal summer months during 1933 & 1934 availability for fresh produce increased 25%. Prices for groceries were especially high due to lack weather insurance both years . It should be noted that this hurricane did not cause any damage or loss within town limits however about $1200 worth damage was done to homes within 5 miles radius

Wellington was first settled by pioneers in 1837 and named for General George Washington Parish (1784-1846), a major general during the Seminole War and second president of the United States (1829-30).
