Wellington is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wellington was founded in 1892 by Captain John S. Goodrich and his wife Julia Goodrich on a plantation in present-day Broward County. In 1916, Captain Goodrich's son John M. Goodrich settled the community near Jacksonville in Duval County after finding land for sale there that he had sighted while travelling through the area on horseback. After two years of construction, Wellington welcomed its first residents on December 12, 1916 with coffee and cookies given to them by local women who came from nearby Pompano Beach to deliver the goods. In 1922, when it became apparent that Fort Lauderdale would become an important city due to its location on Biscayne Bay and its links with international trade and commerce, Wellington renamed itself "Fort Lauderdale." By 1930, however, Fort Lauderdale's growth had so outstripped Wellington's that the latter petitioned for annexation into the city; though this request was denied because Fort Lauderdale then did not have any municipalities other thanbroward county (of which Wellington was a part) within its limits (the limit currently being lifted for all cities annexed since 2007). In 1932 Captain Goodrich donated land east of town to form what is now Coral Gables Boulevard; this donation also helpedadsopt Newhall Park as one of Wellington's main streets. Although most people in Wellington live within walking or driving distance of either their homes or work places (the nearest grocery store is about a mile away), many enjoy taking long trips out into southwest Florida without having to leave their home state or dropping everything just for an overnight stop at some remote resort or beach town like Daytona Beach or Jupiter Island. Wellington, Florida was first settled by Englishman in 1819. The town rapidly grew during the late 19th century as a result of its strategic location at the mouth of the Kissimmee River and its connection to Cuba. When the Cuban Revolution began in 1959, Wellington became a battleground between Fidel Castro's Marxist-Leninist regime and United States "Operation Mongoose" forces. In 1966, after years of negotiations, Cuba ceded control of Santiago de Cuba to the United States and Wellington quickly recovered its former prominence as an important naval base and commercial port. As recently as 1990, Wellington ranked second among U.S. cities with the most retail businesses accounting for more than 50% of all business activity. The economic significance of Wellington has not faded over time; since 2000 it has been home to two major military installations: Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Space Corp., which manufactures satellites for NASA. However, despite this recent growth, muchabout Wellington's past remains hidden from view - including some significant events that have shaped both its present and future. In 1819, John Thornton purchased 2 square miles (4 km2) of land on what is now called Inlet Beach Boulevard in what is now known as downtown Wellington from José Rizal for $1 per acre ($30 per hectare). Thornton named his new town after Mount Victoria - one of British Columbia's most prominent mountain ranges - because he thought it would be a "model community." Over time, however, Thornton abandoned his model town concept in favor of developing Iturbide Avenue into one of North Florida's largest shopping strips flanked by high-rise apartments development beginning in 1927. One reason why Iturbide Avenue became such a popular shopping strip was that it bisected Flagler Street which served as the only viable transportation link between downtown Wellington and residential areas on either side of the street. Flagler Street also served as an important artery linking Kingston – located about 25 miles (40 km) away – with other parts of North Florida through routing roads such as US 1/27 running along its length east-west while also connecting Jacksonville with Tampa via US 301/SR 347 southward across Polk County to West Palm Beach via SR 921 northward parallel to US 1/27 just outside Ofilton Airport before terminating at SR 346 exit on SR 950 near Old fort Myers today's Clearwater Municipal Airport). The original flagpole still stands today adjacent to where SR 346 ends at I-275 exit (southbound), just west of New Fort Myers International Airport today’s Port Everglades International airport serving Miami Dade County! This commercial axis around Iturbide Avenue eventually attracted upscale professionals who desired easy access to everything Flagler hadto offer while overlooking neighborless neighborhoods within walking distance or less than five minutes' drive! This elite clientele soon spawned several successful neighborhood associations including The Polo Club (then known simply as “The Club”), South Walton Association (now known simply as “Walton”), Sunrise Association (now known simply as “Sunrise”), Belle Glade Association (now known simply “Belle Glade”) etc., until finally being amalgamated into one umbrella organization under then current name: The Wellesley Community Development Corporation circa 1978).
