Wellington is a small town in DeSoto County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wellington was founded by settlers from New Zealand in 1887 and named for General John Forbes Wellington (1784-1852), a British general who fought in the American Revolution and then served as an administrator of Cuba before becoming a U.S. congressman from Georgia. In 1902, when Florida became a state, Wellington was placed within Indian River County and renamed after George Washington Bainbridge, one of the first white men to settle in the area. In 1928, it became part of Jacksonville along with other towns in Duval County that had been reincorporated since 1907 following passage of the Jacksonville Reorganization Act which created Jackson County. In 1962, when DeSoto County was formed from parts of Indian River and Duval Counties, Wellington remained within DeSoto but its status changed to incorporated municipality underJacksonville Municipal Code section 9-5-101 et seq., until 1974 when it reverted back to village status under section 9-5-203 et seq., effective January 1, 1975. The name "Wellington" comes from English General John Forbes' use of the place as his summer home on Stonington Plantation during his military service during the American Revolution (1784-1852). He was looking for a new route to India and his ship ran into difficulties in the reefs near Jacksonville.
