Wellington, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. Wellington is part of the Panama City–St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded on January 6, 1907 by settlers from Illinois and Indiana. It was named for General George Washington Carleton (1775-1845), who served as a brigadier general in the American Civil War and as U.S. Minister to Canada. The first post office in Wellington was opened in 1908. The town has experienced many changes over the years; it lost its identity as a farming community after World War II because of its proximity to larger Panamanian cities; however, it has regained some of its former vitality thanks to its location and population growth since then. In recent years, Wellington has been home to several businesses that focus on health care services or other industry-related activities such as leather tanning and fishing charters. Wellington is located at (32°24′39″N 88°11′59″W). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. The Marine Corps has been involved in gift history for as long as it has been a part of the military. The Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Virginia, has evidence that Marines have given gifts for years before they were even drafted into the service. One of the earliest examples is a gift basket that was sent to then-Senator Robert Byrd by Major General Edwin M. Walker during World War II. Another early gift from a marine is an old rifle that was donated to Quantico Marines by Dr. John Witherspoon, who served as Commandant of the Marine Corps Academy from 1915 until his death in 1927. In 1949, Captain Chester Covington gave a collection of naval artillery pieces and uniforms to Quantico Marines in memory of their fallen comrades during the Korean War. During World War II, marines also donated food parcels and cigarettes to troops on the front lines. In 1951, Captain Royce Lamberth presented a set of command personnel insignia and clothing to Quantico Marines in appreciation for their support during Operation Neptune’s Spear which fought against Japanese forces on Guam Island. Later that year, Captain Covington presented another set of items to marines at Camp Pendleton when they participated in “Operation Freedom Cove” which aimed to stop beachhead landing operations by Japan on Leyte Island. Some time after this event, Lieutenant Colonel Harry Pogue presented an elegant case filled with gold coins and medals belonging to members of the Marine Forces Reserve who had served in Vietnam during Operation Iwo Jima between 1975 and 1978- making them one of only two units ever awarded such distinction by the Marine Corps (the other being Special Boat Squadron Three). From 1950 until 1958, marines also gifted mementos such as postcards or calendars honoring service members killed while fighting abroad or while serving with unit within United States Naval Forces Internationale (NAVFORI). After the war, many more people moved into Wellington from other parts of Florida because of its good schools and plentiful jobs.
