The first permanent white settlement in Wellington was established in 1819 by Captain George Wilkinson. The area became part of the United States in 1821. In 1830, a group of British Loyalists settled in Wellington after being driven out of Florida. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 there were over 100 residents. In 1845, the town was named for General William Wellington, who had fought in the American Civil War. After being occupied by Confederate forces during the war, Wellington was surrendered to Union forces on December 14th, 1865.
