Wellington is located on FM 1727 north-northwest of downtown Jacksonville and south of I-95. The town's ZIP code is 32608. The history of Wellington begins with George Washington's crossing overland from Alexandria to Pensacola in 1824. In 1828, two brothers named Jepson bought some land in what is now Wellington and began to build a gristmill on the current site of the present day school building. A post office was established in 1830 and continued to be used until 1903 when it merged with nearby Uniontown into one postal district under that name. In 1839, John Nixon built a house on what are now Old Ben Hill Road and Main Street in Wellington for his wife who had just lost her husband, James Nixon Sr.. The first store opened there about 1840 which was known as "Nixon's Store". After James Nixon Jr.'s death in 1852, his widow continued to operate the store until1860 when she sold it to Elisha Biddle Harriman who moved from New York City and operated it until his death in 1912. In 1860, Andrew Johnson became President of the United States after winning an election promising change following the American Revolution including guarantees for religious liberty and civil rights for all Americans regardless of race or sex (the Emancipation Proclamation). On April 28th 1865 he issued an order dissolving both Houses of Congress without notice due to sectional differences caused by Abraham Lincoln's appointment as Secretary of State resulting from congressional failure to pass legislation abolishing slavery within three years following Lincoln's inauguration taking office on January 20th 1865 despite recommendation by Joint Committee on Reconstruction led by General Ulysses S. Grant rated "astute" but not perfect because its recommendations were not followed "...we cannot help feeling that portion (of this report) tending towards our political enemies has been too much noticed." In 1865 Captain John Denton - commander US Naval Forces Mobileblock Blockading Squadron 8 - landed his USS Monitor off Cape Hatteras Island during Confederate naval blockade attempting forced landing/takeover against orders from Confederate Vice Admiral Robert Farragut at Norfolk Virginia which ended up successful resulting in Averell Harriman becoming United States Minister Resident afloat & later Ulysses S Grant being appointed Commanding General West Point Military Academy before he resigned effective November 15th 1870 effective December 5th 1870 due lack of succession planning; Commodore Charles Cushing succeeded him while living ashore at West Point.) On October 1st 1870 Commodore Charles Cushing disembarked USS Constitution off Havana Cuba after successful bombardment & capture thereof leading to Spanish withdrawal from Cuba effective November 24th 1870 ending overland slave trade operations) Withdrawals began affecting other parts of America also resulting in increased competition for labor & land resulted creating new waves of immigration bringing new cultural ideas & technologies such as electricity (this event helped prompt passage through Congress enabling electric streetlights nationwide beginning February 14th 1880) Under Commodore Cushing’s command USS Constitution participated successfullyOperation Neptune’s Spear – Battle off Santiago de Cuba July 26-29 1886 encountering Federal forces commanded by Major General Winfield Scott – Resulting loss for Confederates 3 killed 11 wounded with Captains Slater King Brown & Edward Pugh Ketchum commanding forces losing only 2 men killed Lieutenant William Vanderbilt Beall remaining uninjured.) By 1890 most transportation facilities having been abandoned except steamboats running between KingstonFt Myers& St Petersburg Floridas main shipping channels making travel very difficult especially during winter months making maritime trade very important.) By 1910 most businesses closed down leaving few people left living near school or grocery stores along main streets). At that time there were no public transportation available so residents relied heavily upon horse drawn buggies., walkers or cars.). Some residents did manage to install small private streetcar lines however these services were very limited compared with today’s options.)
