The first Europeans to arrive in what is now West Melbourne were French settlers who founded a post at Stonington Bay on November 7th 1765A group of Englishmen arrived at Fort Caroline about this time as traders with links to Miami River Captain John Stonington (1686-1764). The British had control of Havana while Spanish rule controlled much of South America; they hoped to open upFlorida as a source colony by linking it with northern England through trade routes through North America The first permanent settler in what is now West Melbourne was James Ketchum who built his home near present day Davenport Road on December 3rd 1800 He cleared land for farming using hand axes and hoes which he named Ketchum Fields after himself Ketchum sold his holdings soon afterward and started building homes which became known as "the White House" or "West Melbourne." It wasn't until 1902 when developers began buying land east of Davenport Road for subdivisions that townhood status was granted The first schools were established in 1903 when Lt. Governor Clements donated land north of present day Washington Boulevard for a school district called "West Melbourne School District." Classes initially operated out of barracks located at Ft Myers beach but quickly moved into Troup Hall before being relocated to new buildings on First Street in 1914 In 1916 construction began on what is now State Capitol Square where state government offices are currently located In 1925 voters approved annexation by Broward County making West Melbourne one full county
In 1904, the West Melbourne post office was opened. In 1912, the name was changed to Miami. On November 3, 1926, Miami was annexed by Miami Beach.
