The community was founded by elements of the Dutch and Spanish cultures in 1853 when they were relocated to what is now Miami-Dade County from Jackson County. West Melbourne first incorporated as a town on November 4, 1903. The name "Wesleyan" originated with Rev. A C Wesley who came to Florida in 1837 as an evangelical preacher looking for new land for his church organization after preaching around Jacksonville and other parts of South America. He found some open space just east of downtown that he called "Wesleyan." In 1903, residents voted to change the name to West Melbourne because it sounded more like English than either "Jacksonville" or "Miami". The original town site had three square miles including most of what is now Coral Gables and Laytowns Beach northward; Little Haiti south of I-4 and slightly west of Biscayne Boulevard; Everglades National Park east side between US 1/Broward Boulevard and US 7/Seminole Road; Cutler Bayou (now Glades Blvd.) southeast and northwest of I-10 near current day University Drive; Trinity River between US 1/Broward Boulevard and Morrison Bridge Rd.; and North Shore Drive southwest from current day Southwest Freeway across present day Bayfront Ave., becoming one continuous community with its own post office which opened on December 12, 1903 The area that would become West Melbourne was once swampy due to salt water accumulation over time from rain runoff during hurricane seasons such as Hurricane Andrew in 1992 which caused extensive flooding throughout much of northeastern Miami-Dade County including parts of West Melbourne In 1958 annexation by Doral resulted in establishment as a city within Miami-DadeCounty limits while still lying within swampy areas adjacent to Everglades National Park
