The Coast Guard Museum in West Melbourne, Florida has a gift history dating back to the 1920s. The museum is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the culture, history, and legacy of the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard Museum’s collection includes over 2,000 items from throughout the Coast Guard’s history. One of the earliest gifts from the Coast Guard Museum was a set of vintage naval charts. This donation was made in 1922 in memory of Captain Isaac Paris who had died in an accident while serving with the Coast Guard. In 1925, a coffee mug was given to Capt. Clarence Waddington by his father-in-law, Mr. Leroy Madden Jr., founder and first president of Miami Dolphins football team. This donation marked Capt. Waddington’s retirement from service with the Coast GUard after 20 years of leadership at sea and on land during World War II as Commanding Officer of USS Ponce (LPH-3). In 1951, a watchtower was donated to the museum by Mrs. Donald Murchison for use as part of its exhibits about emergency signals and tower construction during World War II. This gift also included historical photographs and specimens from her husband's career as an assistant engineer on radio duties at Cape Canaveral Naval Air Station between 1940-1945 when he helped design America's first operational jet airliner -the Lockheed Electrajet! A plaque inscribed with Mrs. Murchison's husband's name is located adjacent to this exhibit.] In 1966, three mementos were gifted to the museum by Rear Admiral Rufus King who served commandant afloat training cadets at NAS Pensacola before becoming commanding officer USCG San Diego Fleet Auxiliary in 1969.] A life jacket donated by Lt Commander Don Ewing After his loss overboard while serving aboard HMAS Australian Shore Patrol during Typhoon Fay Yolanda made headlines around world An extensive collection including both early warning weather reporting equipment such as semaphore telegraphy radios (1914) and masthead radios (1920), US Navy salvage tools including net cutters (1941) used extensively during WWII being exhibited includes: torpedo tubes Mk V(1), Mk VII(2), depth charges Mk XII(2), torpedoes F4F2C(1), F4F2D(1) In 1984 a replica lifeboat was gifted by Commodore John L Stroud Headquarters History Branch Naval History Department Headquarters District Miami Beach FL for use along side existing USCGC Chouanet lifeboats stationed along coastlines all across America] In 2003 two more sets of vintage naval charts were given away when both USS Truxtun CG 453and USS Shenandoah CG 612were retired from service] In 2006 two pistol grips were gifted to stationNAS Key West FL ] At present there are six antique pistols stored within The Coastal GUard Museum including: 1851 Colt Peacemaker grandeur model revolver; 1876 S&W revolver manufactured for US Revenue Cutter Service; 1903 Colt Model 1910 Army Pistol; 1912 Springfield Armory Single Action Army Pistol; 1911 Colt National Defense Pistol
