The navy has a long and proud history in the Sunshine State. The Tampa Bay Naval Shipyard built USS Enterprise (CVN-64) in 1966, and the navy's first destroyer, USS Fitzgerald (DDG-79), was commissioned in 1985. The fleet has also deployed to the Arabian Peninsula multiple times, most recently in December 2018 as part of Operation Inherent Resolve. In recent years, there have been increasing calls for the navy to deploy warships closer to shore. This is due to concerns about China's growing military power and its efforts to build submarines that can reach US shores. In response, Fleet Admiral Jim Stavridis announced that the navy would send two destroyers - USS Constitution (CVN-65) and USS Milwaukee (LPD-9) -to West Melbourne, Florida in 2019 as part of Project Maven. These deployments will be used as training exercises for ships based at Naval Station Jacksonville. This event marked the first time that America had ever sent troops into another country on an official mission. From 1969-1992, the navy sent a shipment of medical supplies to Somalia in order to help with its rebuilding process after being bombed by NATO forces. From 1995-1996, they also sent a shipment of toys and games to Haiti in order to help children improve their education and morale during its post-earthquake period. These donations helped create some great relationships between our country and other nations during these times!
