They built their homes on the edge of today's downtown and continued to cultivate land around the bayou until white settlement began in earnest in the early 1800s. The first white settler in what is now West Melbourne was Captains John S. Cook and James Fenton, who bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of present-day downtown on July 3, 1848. The men named their new community after Lord Byron’s home country of England – but they soon realized that they would need a name that would reflect both its location and its purpose: “West Melbourne” would be an allusion to Englishman Captain James Cook’s discovery of Australia more than two centuries earlier, while “Fenton” designatedCaptain Fenton himself as the first proprietor or founder because he purchased the land from Josiah Wedgwood for $8 per mile (2 cents per kilometer). This initial group of pioneers quickly developed some important activities within their new community: trading with Native American natives for goods such as corn, tobacco, hides and beads; erecting a small schoolhouse; founding a Presbyterian church; constructing 12 miles (19 kilometers) of road from brigantine ferry landing at Frenchman Point to central west village; and building numerous residences including one called “Milton House” which still stands today on Grosse Pointe Boulevard just east of downtown West Melbourne.
