Spanish speakers also settled in this area during this time period. During World War I, many local soldiers served in the military and some continue to do so today as police officers or firefighters. Many homes in downtownWest Palm Beach were converted into barracks during World War I because so many people needed space to live and work while they fought overseas. Many Alaskan Natives who had been living in what is now Broward County since before European contact settled here around 1911 when word arrived that sugarcane would be available near Hollywood Boulevard; these early settlers are sometimes referred to as “Wild Bill Roberts” colonists because they purchased land east of Rte 527 near Plantation Road which ran through today’s Hollywood Hills neighborhood
