In 1957, the Air Force's 7th Bomb Wing activated at Offutt AFB in Wichita, Kansas. The wing was redesignated the 379th Bomb Wing on May 1, 1957 and activated at West Palm Beach Municipal Airport as a provisional bombardment squadron under First Lt. Edwin A. Latham's command. The wing began operations from West Palm Beach Municipal Airport on October 15, 1957 with three B-29 Superfortresses operated by the 367th Bomb Squadron (Heavy) of the 548th Bomb Group (Medium). The 379th BW initially flew combat missions over South Vietnam using Boeing E-4B Skymasters flown out of RAF Wattenhampton in England as part of Operation "Lend a Hand" during the early days of our involvement in that war. On December 10, 1967 we were reassigned to Saigon and used Fairchild Republic F-5E Tiger IIs to provide air support for ground forces engaged in bloody sweeps through Binh Dinh Province supported by USAF Tactical Fighter aircraft equipped with Hellfire missiles! These engagements continue until 1975 when we returned home following our last deployment to Thailand! On September 25, 1991 the 379th BW relocated from Offutt AFB to Griffiss AFB NY after being grounded due to an engine failure suffered while conducting training mission over Canada! After only two months at Griffiss AFB (home since 1948 of Vermont's 463d AWG), it was reactivated on November 5 as an electronic warfare squadron flying Northrop Grumman EA-6B Prowlers! This assignment lasted until 1997 when it was reassigned back to Griffiss AFB as a unit Logistics Support Squadron providing taxiway access and hangar maintenance services for units stationed there! In 1999 I became Deputy Director for Operations/Tactical here at Griffiss AFB; effective January 1st 2000 I assumed my present position which is currently Rear Admiral Christopher Waddington's Assistant Director for Military Affairs here at Offutt AFB!"
