The Coast Guard gift history in West Palm Beach, Florida begins with the organization of the Coast Guard on August 29, 1941. At that time, a group of citizens from South Florida gathered together to form a volunteer force to help protect their coastline. The first order of business was to name the force and decide its purpose. Captain James J. Ladd proposed that they be called the “West Palm Beach Defense Squadron” and this name has been retained ever since. In 1951, Captain John S. Wynne took command of the squadron and began expanding its operations into other areas of Miami-Dade County including Jupiter and Aventura. In 1970, Captain Don Horman assumed command and continued expanding our coast guard mission until he left in 1984 to become Assistant Commissioner for Homeland Security under President Reagan. Since then, Commandant Loren Bourgeois has led the unit as it continues working hard to safeguard our community by providing emergency response services as well as law enforcement activities such as patrolling beaches and enforcing local ordinances. West Palm Beach, Florida is a city located in the state of Florida. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 166,711. The city is named for Admiral Benjamin West who was the Commandant of Fort Lauderdale from 1887 to 1897. West Palm Beach was founded on December 4, 1915 by Captain James Hickey and his wife Esther Purdy Hickey with the goal of providing an attractive resort town for members of the United States Coast Guard. The first phase of development began in 1916 when Captain Hickey donated land for a golf course and country Club. By 1920, over $105 million had been spent on developing West Palm Beach which included the construction of hotels, restaurants, theaters and other public facilities. In 1926, Mayor Sidney Wickersham designated part of downtown as "Theaters District" in honor of movie moguls Harry Cohn and Louis B Mayer who had financed much of early Miami's development. By 1930, West Palm Beach had become one of South Florida's most prominent tourist destinations with its beautiful beaches and lush vegetation. During World War II much progress was made to improve infrastructure including building barracks for military personnel and creating an airfield at Ft Myers Island which would later be used by American forces during Operation Overlord. However, many communities in South Floridians were destroyed in hurricanes such as Irma or Jose which caused extensive damage to homes and businesses along with loss of life and physical destruction some considered unparalleled in U.S history In 1949 Mayor James Treen designated "The Boulevard district" eastward from US 1 (the present day 5th Street) across Black Creek Canyon as part Southeastern Boulevard Development District No. 2 which became known as "West Palm Beach". It should be noted that this designation did not reflect any political affiliation since all property within this district lay within then City limits . In 1961 Mayor Joe Lopardo appointed Driscoll as Manager/Presidential Designee serving until 1969 when he succeeded Mayor Rudolph Giuliani after Giuliani's election victory . West Palm Beach is a city in the U.S. state of Florida and the county seat of Palm Beach County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 879, making it one of Floridas most populous cities. The city is located on the Atlantic Coast near Miami and Boca Raton. The first Europeans to visit what is now West Palm Beach were in 1565 when Giovanni da Verrazzano discovered and named this area "Boca Raton". A letter from Governor Thomas Dudley describing a party sent by Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés to explore Florida in 1587 notes that "...the inhabitants hereabouts are very friendly people" and they provide refreshments while they awaited help from Spain to return home. In 1614, Englishman John Churchill landed at Boca Raton with 119 men looking for new land to colonize after findingNB; Elsewhere on their voyage he had mentioned an Indian town called West Palm Beaches which he thought might be accessible by water from elsewhere on Florida." He named his landing place for his friend George Washington who had died during the American Revolution: Fort Churchill or "West Palm Beach" (though later Fort Worth would take its name). When France ceded Florida to England in 1813 as part of Treaty of Paris, West Palm Beach became part of Jacksonville Township under British jurisdiction. The following year, Jacksonville was annexed into Broward County and renamed West Palm Beach Municipal Airport. It wasn't until November 1925 when both townships were merged into one municipality under the name "West palm beach". The original boundaries included present day Delray Boulevard between Stilts Road eastward and Northwest First Street northward; North Avenue between Second Street westward and Northwest First Street eastward; Sunrise Boulevard southwesterly between Third Street eastward and Sunrise Highway northwesterly; South Boulevard between Fourth Street westward and Sunrise Highway southwesterly. In 1941, World War II began with America's entry into war against Japan but soon afterwards hostilities turned sour as America entered into military alliances with many different countries including Nazi Germany, Mussolini's Italy, Stalin's USSR, Mexico etc etc.). On December 7th 1941 Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbordropping more than 100 atomic bombs on Hawaii resulting in over 200 fatalities including US Naval Officer William Rickenbacker who famously said: "I am not surprised that MacArthur went crazy – because it was like hitting bottom". This bombing created amassive refugee crisis across much of Asia with more than 2 million people fleeing southeast Asia before finally reaching Australia where they were interned without trial or any access to food or water until 1943 when they were released as part of Operation Boys Over Flowers which ended Japanese rule in Southeast Asia.. After World War II ended there was heavy economic activity as Americans poured back into town seeking opportunities during an postwar boom period which lasted until 1970s when then-Mayor Dick Manges declared bankruptcy amidst high crime rates caused largely by a rise in black drug users & dealers although some progress has been made since then such as increasing employment opportunities for locals through various development projects such as MARTA rail service.. With no end in sight to high crime rates & little hope for change anytime soon despite Mayor Manges' efforts community services have become increasingly important especially given that property values continueto increase even amid low commodity prices typical for coastal areas suffering during recessions However recent budget cuts have resultedin possible reductionsin services offered& potential lossof jobs so residents are anxiously awaiting news about future plans
