West Palm Beach is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Combined Statistical Area. West Palm Beach is one of five cities that make up the Port of Miami metropolitan area. West Palm Beach's history begins with Dutch settlers who arrived in 1655. The first recorded settler was Hendrick van der Weyden. By 1795, English colonists had taken up residency and by 1810 they had built Fort Willamina on mangrove swamp near present-day downtown West Palm Beach. In 1834, Spanish colonists arrived and founded Pompano Key as part of their attempt to control the trade between Cuba and Florida through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. In 1845, following annexation by Florida from Mexico, West Palm Beach became a part of the newly created state of Florida along with other cities including Daytona and Jacksonville. The city's first mayor was James Denton and its first recorder was Uriah Heflin. In 1907 it annexed neighbouring Brevard County which added an additional 2,500 residents to the city total; this made West Palm Beach one of Floridas' fastest growing municipalities during this time period - until Booker T Washington moved to Tuskegee University in 1928). On February 10th 1909 Mayor John Wieters convened a meeting at City Hall to discuss forming a Municipal Council to manage affairs within the municipality (the concept would not be introduced nor utilized until decades later when City Manager Charlie Olmsted took charge). In 1932 incorporation as a municipal corporation resulted in Sloppy Joe's becoming ground zero for many social changes that year; local attorney Harry Payne Long helped create what eventually became known as "The Town". On November 5th 1940 Wieters resigned after being appointed US Senator from Florida; his replacement Edwin Rutledge enacted ordinances limiting women's right to vote while also establishing zoning regulations that remain in place today - all without consulting with or getting input from citizens or businesses! A referendum results in passage by referenda ballot measure allowing for limited liquor sales within town limits only – although alcohol continued vendition off-site into subsequent years! A new arena was needed for Sloppy Joe’s multiplexplex movie theater complex – an endeavor spearheaded by then Mayor Howard Johnson who successfully raised funds through grantsmanship efforts administered by his predecessor John Wieters Sr.; construction commenced on November 20th 1984 under then Project Manager Roy Holland ( himself former President/CEO/CFO/ Deputy Mayor/Director Of Planning & Development at First National Bank) just four months after Hurricane Andrew struck SouthFlorida injuring 80% of all homes statewide! At long last –Wilt’s seminal restaurant business model could finally come to fruition following more than 25 years worth hard work! With approximately 235 employees inside and outstriping even Walt Disney World’s employment rate back then Sloppy Joe’s generated over $100 million annually before closing its doors for good on December 31st 1990 amidst much fanfare throughout our hometown community… representing positive change quite literally!!!
