The Marine Corps deployed gift history in West Palm Beach, Florida in 1954. The Marines stationed here included the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines and 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. These units were both activated on December 12th, 1949 at Camp Lejeune. They were both later redesignated as the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines on November 15th, 1954. The battalion was deactivated on October 31st, 1958 at West Palm Beach Naval Shipyard.
West Palm Beach is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,641 at the 2010 census. It has a rich history dating back to 1853 when it was part of the Spanish colony of Cuba. In 1907, West Palm Beach became an incorporated town and in 1912 it became a city. The population grew rapidly during World War II until the war led to some mass flight of residents and businesses; however, since then the city's growth has been steady and continue to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida. The area now comprising West Palm Beach was first populated by Native Americans in what is now Monroe County. European exploration began with Captain John Stennis going ashore on Biscayne Bay on November 3, 1513 and naming this location Fort Lauderdale after his homeport of Lisbon (Portugal). On October 11, 1795 Lieutenant James Wilkinson explored as far northeast as Jupiter Key before turning back because he found no land there. He named this area "West Palm Beach" after his new discovery off Miami Lakes Naval Station where he landed on December 6th. In 1853, when Cuba became a U.S.-owned territory following its independence from Spain, many Spaniards who had lived in Havana took refuge in West Palm Beach as they felt they would not be treated fairly under American rule. Some families started construction of their homes here while others joined them soon afterward including José María Narváez who founded two newspapers – La Cadena Libre (1854) and El cubano Libre (1855). During World War I some 521 men from Tampa were drafted into service with Company D2/8th Infantry Regiment stationed at Camp David near West Palm Beach for three months beginning February 1915 before being sent overseas to fight on April 8th 1915 aboard USS " Texas ". The soldiers were later released but their equipment remained behind which led to an event that is still commemorated annually - "Tampa-Day" which falls on July 2nd each year instead of August 15th as planned due to lack of WWII veterans' recognition ceremonies taking place that date back to World War I era! On May 15th 1909 Mayor Fenton Waddell organized what is today known as ""The First Day Parade"" which paraded down Ocean Boulevard downtown starting at First Avenue corner Market Street immediately following sunrise ending just past Second Avenue corner Park Street......This event served as prelude to future parade programs such as The Legion Showcase or Marching For Our Flag events which have become annual fixtures throughout town.......Many years later Mrs Waddell donated her old City Hall building located at 1202 University Ave for use by the Chamber Of Commerce.........In 2007 City Manager Ronnie Moody announced plans for renovation/upkeep of North side parkette adjacent Main Street between US 1A & US1B Streets.....The project will remove all benches inside the parkette plus installation of asphalt path leading out front....With more than 10 years experience managing large scale projects within our municipality we are confident that this project will meet or exceed your expectations

West Palm Beach, Florida is a city located in the southeastern United States. The population was 797 at the 2000 census, making it the second most populous city in Palm Beach County after Palm Springs. West Palm Beach has been inhabited for over three hundred years and is one of the oldest cities in America. It became a town in 1868 and then a city in 1912. The first white person to live here was James K. Polk, who had arrived on a sailing ship from Liverpool on December 15th, 1847. He surveyed some of what is now West Palm Beach and wrote about it in his book “A Narrative of Travels through Florida During the Years 1788-1795”
The city of West Palm Beach was founded in 1917 by two men, Dr. George B. Webster and Dr. Julius Rosenwald, who were looking to establish a community on the shores of Palm Beach Bay. The area that is now West Palm Beach was originally called "Boca Raton". The name came from an old Indian word meaning "the place where the crocodiles live." The first house in what is now West Palm Beach was built by Dr. Webster and his wife, Emma Boaz Webster. They named their home “Boca Raton” after the Boca River, which ran through the town at that time. In 1923, Dr. Webster gave control of Boca Raton to his son-in-law, Marion Rosenthal; Rosenthal renamed it West Palm Beach after himself and donated land for a park in 1924. palmbeach
