This event marked the first time that USAF personnel deployed to Southeast Asia as part of Operation "Dakota" and the first time that a USAF unit participated in a NATO operation. The gift history event also featured air-to-air combat demonstrations between fighter jets from USAFE and RAF England.
West Park is a census-designated place in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community of West Park was started by settlers from Illinois in 1876 as a small station on the railroad between Clearwater and St. Petersburg. The name "West Park" was chosen because it was located on the parkland that now includes most of its territory. By 1907, West Park had a post office and two churches: one Presbyterian and one Methodist. The first paved road through what is now West Park arrived in 1915, making it easier for farmers to sell their crops to people living in nearby Tampa and Clearwater. In 1922, developers bought out the original settlers and began building homes around a large golf course they had developed called Deerfield Golf Club. Today, Deerfield Golf Club still offers membership to those who want to play there with or without charge (though some members do receive special privileges such as access to discounts). In addition to its golf course, Deerfield also has an Olympic-sized swimming pool and tennis courts; a movie theater; several restaurants; a convenience store; and several houses for sale by owner or agents. As deer hunting became more popular throughout Southeast Florida during the 1920s and 1930s (due largely to Prohibition), deer farmers turned instead to turkey hunting that same decade. That led directly to development of what are now downtown Saint Petersburg's baseball/softball diamond (now known as Tropicana Field) as well as other businesses along First Avenue North near State Road 605 (the old route U S 11 took before turning east towards Tallahassee) which were originally operated by landowners whose land lay within what is now west side of Downtown Saint Pete proper including areas north of current State Road 405/Ace Hardware Road including parts of Hillsborough County today although much later these holdings passed into city control following annexation by Saint Petersburg back in 1954 when St Pete annexed Hillsborough County
The Air Force has been deploying gift baskets to service members and their families since the early days of World War II. In 1951, Air Force Brigadier General Walton H. Wright designed and implemented the first air force gift basket campaign. The program was known as “Operation Merry Christmas” and involved sending large baskets filled with army-issue food, cigarettes, radios, hats, clothes, etc., to military personnel stationed abroad. Since then, the Air Force has continued to send gift baskets to servicemen and women around the world in an effort to show its appreciation for their service. There are a variety of gift basket campaigns that the Air Force conducts each year, including Operation CHRISTMAS PRESENTS (which includes a Christmas tree ornaments for all servicemen/women),Operation MERRY JANE ( which includes gifts such as candy bars or chocolates),Operation DUTCH KISS ( which includes flowers or gifts from Dutch civilians living in overseas installations),Operation WINTER WISHES( which includes toys or other items for children at home), and evenOperation SAVING TIME( which features small donations of used clothing or furniture). In recent years, there have also been special campaigns called “Gift Baskets from Heaven” and “Gift Basket extravaganza III” in order to focus more on Reindeer games and photo opportunities for servicemen/women deployment locations around the world. Even though these campaigns are conducted every year, it is still always fun to see what new ideas the Air Force comes up with every time!
The RAF deployed a number of gift history items in different parts of the world during World War II. Some of these include: air-raid sirens, Spitfires, bombers and fighter planes, postcards, medals and other memorabilia.
West Park was originally named after President James K. Polk and his wife Mary Alice. The area now known as West Park was purchased by the state of Florida in 1881. In 1923, West Park became a city and was renamed for James K. Polk once again. In 1955, West Park was annexed into Tallahassee, Florida, making it the largest city in the state at that time. The City of Tallahassee has continued to operate within West Park since its incorporation date and today the city is home to over 100,000 residents. Today, much of what makes up West Park has been restored or reactivated from when it first belonged to the State of Florida. Many of the original trees that were present when West Park was founded still stand today including six growth hogs which are unique symbols of Tallahassee’s history and culture. Additionally, many cultural artifacts found throughout the years have been recovered and returned to their rightful places in town such as a Chinese restaurant that operated until 1978 and an old blacksmith shop which is now used as a community center. In addition to its historical significance and rich culture, another reason why West Park is so popular among locals is because it is one of only two neighborhoods located entirely within downtown Tallahassee! This allows for easy access to all that Downtown has to offer without having to leave Westernpark or go out on University Avenue which often feels like an extension of Interstate 495 just outside our doorstep!
West Park was founded on November 3, 1892 by J. Alfred Prufrock and W.H.Galloway. The park is located in the heart of Clearwater County and contains over 350 acres of land.
