West Park was established in 1892 as a community on the north side of Tallahassee, Florida. The name comes from the Spanish word "parque" meaning "park." In 1925, West Park became part of the City of Tallahassee. In 1967, it merged with neighboring communities to form the new city of Tallahassee. The history of West Park begins with Spain's arrival in Florida in 1513. They named this area Primitive America because they found no other land that resembled what they were used to in Europe. After landing at Stonington Island on February 28th, 1513 and exploring these new lands for many weeks, they discovered an island that looked like a park and named it Parque de las Indias (Park of America). As time passed and more people came to live here, they started calling this area Platón (Plato). Eventually, this name was changed to West Park after American Revolutionary General George Washington visited here in 1795. In 1892, when Tallahassee was founded, there weren't any parks or green spaces within its boundaries so residents formed groups to pool their money and build one. The first park was called La Isla de la Mujer (The Isle of Women), which is now known as Government House Square. This group raised enough money to buy land onwhat is now Candler Road between 3rd Street and 4th Street for $2 per acre ($8 per lot). This site would become home to our first public park - West Park - which opened its doors on July 1st, 1892. On December 6th of that year by order of Mayor Fenton we renamed Government House Square - Plaza Mayor del Paseo (Mayor's square - today called Emancipation Square) because then-Governor John Crouch had ordered all state capitols be renamed squares upon taking office following the restoration of democracy in Haiti after General Haitian Revolution (1804-1805). In 1928 we annexed adjacent communities including Dunsmore Beach which at that time consisted onlyof sandhills and boat ramp located off Highway 98 near present day Dunsmore Boulevard; Cocoa Beach which consisted onlyof a small harbor; Clearwater Bayou which stretched from Clearwater Creek into Indian Hill County; Fort Myers Beach consisting onlyof three streets connected by a dirt road running back into Indian Hill County; Pinellas County consisting onlyof six miles long shoreline extending out into Gulfport Harbor; Polk County consisting onlyof about five miles long shoreline extending out into Tampa Bay;and Taylor Riverwy consistonlyof a few hundred yards wide channel connecting two discontiguous lots adjoining Sanford located about ten miles southwest from downtown Tallahassee As our population grew we began needing more space so we bought additional land until we had an open field measuring over 500 acres where we currently reside today . On November 12th 1935 President Franklin D Roosevelt granted us perpetual use and occupancy by the government for our newly built Intrepid Sea Squadron Headquarters/Airfield/Aircraft Storage Area/Aviation Museum etc... Now known as US Naval Air Station Pensacola-Westpark AFB
