The United States Army has a long history in West Park, Florida. The first military presence in the area was small and token, consisting of a detachment of soldiers garrisoned at Fort Brooke on Pensacola Bay. In 1821, the U.S. Congress passed the Morrill Act which authorized the creation of a Missouri brigade to be quartered at West Park for service in Indian Wars along the Georgia-South Carolina border. The brigade arrived in October 1822 and soon became embroiled in an affair with local woman Captain Sarah Polk (1786-1860). After being relieved by General Andrew Jackson's army from this assignment, Polk took her men camping on her property near present day West Park on November 3rd 1822. After some heated argument between the two women, Polk's men burned down Polks' house and killed all their occupants; she escaped unharmed to join Jackson's forces retreating back across Canada River into Tennessee. West Park was a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is adjacent to Miami Beach and Biscayne Bay. The area that is now West Park was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. A post office called "Turtle Point" was established in 1868, but it never took off and did not remain in operation for very long. In 1886, Major General John J. Pershing named an area west of his original Fort Pierce encampment "West Park" in honor of then-President James K. Polk's sonnet "Parker's Bay". In 1928, the Miami Herald purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of Biscayne Boulevard from Ishmael Claypool and Estella Maud Parsons for $2 million dollars. The Higgins family bought the land from the Herald on October 14th, 1928 for $3 million dollars; this purchase marked the beginning of what would become one of South Florida's most prominent development families. During World War II two Naval Air Station Miramar -then known as NAS Northridge- were built next door to West Park with Grumman F4F Wildcats flying training missions over Key Largo until 1950 when they were transferred to NAS Jacksonville . This allowed pilots from both Naval Air Stations Miramar and NAS Jacksonville to fly into Biscayne Bay while their aircraft remained parked atNAS Northridge which also handled storage and maintenance during those years! In 1959, after 8 years hiatus due to construction on Key Largo Airport across Southwest Eighth Street from NAS Miramar –due to be completed by 1962 –the first phase of runway renovation began with installation of new asphalt pavement parallel to US 1A just north of present day NW 7th Street & SW First Avenue (west side of park). By 1966 all runways had been renovated including 5/22 which became homeport operations for Flag Aircraft Operations Squadron One(formerly NATS Ocala– later TFRO) during 1964 through 1970 under lease from Coast Guard Reserve Flight Training Command (CGTC) where Aviation Cadet School used hangar #207 since 1951 until 1968 when it became CGTC Tower Annexe prior Helicopter Education Wing).
