The home was completed in 1907 and was known as Hanks House until it was sold to Dr. George Wohlgemuth in 1959. He renamed it West Park Manor after his wife's birthplace in Germany, which he had also visited while living there. Dr. Wohlgemuth served as Mayor of West Park from 1959 until he died in 1984. During his time as Mayor, he made many advancements for the town such as initiating plans for the construction of a park and developing legislation that allowed residents to own cars without having to get permits or drive them into town! His legacy continues to this day with numerous initiatives such as creating an arts center and building a new elementary school! West Park is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. West Park was created in 1925 through consolidation of two smaller communities: Jacksonville and Port Everglades. In 1949, it became an unincorporated community and was annexed by Miami on January 1, 1951. As of the 2010 census, its population had risen to 8,995
The first people to live in West Park were the Seminole Indians. In 1821, Spain ceded Florida to the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris following the Mexican-American War. The land was then sold to a group of Englishmen who named it "West Park." The land was originally used for cotton farming and cattle ranching, but it began to be developed into a small community in the late 1800s. By 1907, West Park had a population of just over 100 residents. In 1916, West Park became an unincorporated community within Miami County. On January 1, 1925, Miami County merged withBroward County to form newly created Broward County. As part of this merger, WestPark became an incorporated town inbroward county. On October 15, 1990, West Park passed an ordinance that repealed its incorporation status and reverted back to unincorporated status.
