This name was given to that land because twoand-a-half miles east of where it now stands there once was a large public park called Park East which stretched along Fifth Avenue and ran all the way to Biscayne Boulevard. After annexation by Miami in 1896, much of the old parkland became Maple Leaf Cemetery and portions were annexed into Overtown until 1954 when they too became part of West Park. The community takes its name from nearby Matheson Airport and many residents are related to aviation through their families' service in the Air Force or Navy or their work with airlines such as American Airlines or Delta Airlines.

West Park was first settled by African Americans in the early 1900s as a commuter town to Overtown and Brickell. The community became known for its large tract of land that included Flagler Boulevard and other major thoroughfares in downtown Miami. The community experienced economic growth during the late 1960s and 1970s thanks to military bases and subsequent development within walking distance of its residents. However, since the 1990s West Park has been struggling with crime rates which have reached epidemic levels; many residents have protested against this trend. In recent years, several efforts have been made to revitalize the community including an effort to create a mixed-income neighborhood called "The Highlands" on former tracts of land adjacent to Flagler Boulevard between Northwest Sixth Street and Northwest Seventh Street; planning for a new high school; and support from city officials for creating a bike share program called "BikeMiami".
