The community was named after James West Sr., a millionaire who donated land for its development. The original homes were built between 1927 and 1929 and are now used as apartments or office space. West Park was first settled by Africans in the 1850s. The area now known as West Park was part of Palm Beach County until it was transferred to Broward County in 1912. It is one of the most affluent areas in South Florida and has been a popular tourist spot since its establishment. The first settlers were African Americans who worked on plantations near present-day West Park. In 1855, they petitioned the Governor of Florida for land that would become West Park. The governor granted them 4,000 acres of land, which they named after their father, Major General James A.Westcott (1786-1863). The white residents of Palm Beach County began buying parcels of land around West Park in 1857, and by 1861 all but 8% of the area had been developed. The first public school opened in West Park in 1865. At that time, instruction was available only from private schools or from home schooling children who could not afford a formal education. Classes were originally held for grades 1 through 7; however, starting in 1872, kindergarten classes were offered at West Park Elementary School until 1955 when it became an pre-kindergarten school under the direction of Mrs. Loretta Morehead Burnett (1911-2006). By 1907, there were 11 schools serving students from grades K through 12 within walking distance of each other at West Park Elementary School and 11 more schools within driving distance either as annexes or satellite campuses throughout Broward County (in addition to Palm Beach High School located adjacent to Fort Lauderdale). In 1923, a golf course was built at what is now Deerfield Drive between Northwest 24th Street and Northwest 32nd Streets east of Royal Road; this course later became known as Miracle Mile Golf Course and still offers guests access today for roundtables and tournaments played by members only (there are no carts available on the property). In 1925, restrictions placed upon development within certain boundaries surrounding South Fort Lauderdale led to the construction of Lake Worth Country Club on what is now Sunrise Boulevard between Northeast 2nd Street and Northeast 5th Street west of I-95 between Metromover Boulevard and University Parkway - this club remains one of South Florida's most exclusive golf courses today with membership currently reaching into excesses beyond any single individual’s means even today!
