West Park owes its name to three gentlemen who had a hand in its development: Colonel William West (1817-1892), banker and congressman from Florida; Judge Augustus Biddle Holland (1806-1887); and Commodore James Ketchum (1793-1878). The first of these gentlemen donated $500 for the erection of a wooden cross on which local students could pray during school hours. The second donation was more significant - $10,000 for the purchase of 8,000 acres of fertile land that would be used for plantations slave labor in return for 20 years’ production at low prices; this offered an excellent opportunity to invest capital without leaving home country or facing competition from other investors. Finally, Commodore James Ketchum contributed his own money in order to build a road system that connected east and west Broward County as well as provide transportation opportunities between these areas.
