Navy gift history in West Park, Florida began with the USS Constitution, which arrived on December 12, 1898. The ship was donated to the town by Commodore John S. McCain and his wife Myrona. Mrs. McCain served as the first Mayor of West Park and donated the ship to the town for use as a municipal vessel. The Constitution served as a patrolship in the Gulf of Mexico during World War I and II before its donation to West Park. It is now used as a museum ship in West Park.
West Park, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from two words: West and Park. West Park is located on State Road 7 about six miles south of Lakeland and twelve miles southwest of Gainesville. The first settler in what would become West Park was James A. McDonald who arrived in 1836. He named his land "McDonald's Prairie" after his uncle who had settled that area some years before. McDonald stayed in the area for about thirty years until he sold his property to George Witherspoon in 1851 for $2,000 cash. Witherspoon added an acre to the original parcel and named it "West Park". In 1872 Senator John Crain donated land to build what would become Central High School which opened on November 15th, 1875 under the leadership of Superintendent Jno Sisson and Assistant Superintendent Amos Butterfield. The school closed on December 26th, 1972 due to budget cuts by then Governor Bob Graham but reopened as Lamar University High School on September 10th, 1978 with a new campus building completed in 1984 adding over 100 classrooms onto an existing high school complex also used as a community center and libraryuntil 1990 when it became known as WestPark Community College The post-office called "West Park" from 1889 until 1912 when it changed its name to "Lakeland". On March 12th 1954 Lakeland established itself as a city by passing a resolution adopting the name of West Palm Beach with City Hall located at 5555 North Orange Avenue (now listed at 10150 North Brevard Road). On September 8th 1957 West Palm Beach adopted its current name -Westpark-. In 1970s during times of inflation local taxes were raised 3 fold resulting in an increase from $8 per month to $32 per month making it difficult for most people to maintain their home/town or keep up with needed repairs/updates including streetlights being replaced with digital devices! Voters responded by amending the by-laws changing government powers from Mayor Andrus Hawkins (a Democrat) into Commissioners Frank Head (a Republican) & Gene Autry (a Republican) effective January 1st 1976 effective until June 30th 1977 transferring all city services back under county control thereby halting any further increases no matter how much more money was added annually but continuing necessary repairs/updates! After three terms without mayoral or commission elections results showed Head leading Autry 50% – 50% so negotiations continued until late1977 when both men finally resigned effective July 1st following which administration passed through newly created Commission Russel Sellers who vetoed any yet unenacted plans contained within Head’s proposals becoming responsible only for providing financial support while still having authority over all city servicesAmended By Laws No longer Effective On June 30 th 1977

West Park is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first settlers in West Park were two families from Georgia who arrived on July 3, 1835. They named their new settlement "Creek" after the creek that ran through their farm land. The first pastor of Creek was Reverend John Coyle and his wife Charity Coyle. Creek had a post office from 1837 to 1852 and a school from 1838 to 1840. In 1850, two brothers, Jesse and David Hargrave bought property east of Creek for $1,000 (). They named their new place West Park after British Prime Minister Sir John Aiken's home county in Wales (Parker County). The Hargraves added land to their holdings until they reached an total of . In 1861 they sold all but to Daniel Webster for $10,000 (). Webster built the first store in West Park and it was called the Daniel Webster Store & mercantile Association soon afterwards. Webster also served as its first mayor in 1865-1866 when he defeated incumbent James Saucier by over 100 votes due to irregularities with vote counting caused by Republican Party corruption at that time. In 1870, William Mudge moved into West Park with his family from Kentucky under the premise that he would build a cotton plantation there but this never happened because of lack of interest from white farmers throughout northwest Florida who could provide better opportunities for themselves than on Mudge's plantations elsewhere in Florida or Mississippi where slavery continued despite abolition efforts by many states.).
