West Park is a census-designated place located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. West Park is bordered by I-95 to the west, Biscayne Boulevard to the north, and Cutler Bay to the east. The community began as a small town on what are now Loop 801 (U.S. 1) and Cutler Bay Road just south of Everglades National Park in North Miami-Dade County in 1965 when developers founded Southwest Enterprises with plans to create a resort area adjacent to the parkland and provide jobs for workers who would help build it. Work on the resort started in 1966 but was never finished due to lack of money from backers and development slowed until 1978 when developer Don Zimmerman purchased Southwest Enterprises and reopened development as West Park Resort Incorporated with plans for more hotels, golf courses, shopping centers and other businesses that failed due largely to economic troubles brought about by rising prices for oil and other commodities during that decade. West Park is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Dade metropolitan area. The town was named after West Park on Long Island, New York. A post office and school were established in 1892, and by 1902 the town had a store and two homes. In 1906 the community formed a village government with a mayor and six councilors. The first white settler in West Park was John Kapp from Brooklyn who bought land in 1911 from Isabella Robinson for $2,000. He built a home that still stands today on South Hogan Avenue near Center Street. Kapp's son Harry also founded West Park Village Hall which still stands today as one of the most important buildings in town. In 1924 an act of Congress created Everglades National Recreation Area including all or part of each county within its boundaries; Broward became its first county (it wasn't until 1988). In 1928 Everglades National Park was designated with its present boundaries; West Park Manor§ became its first housing development within park boundaries south of I-95/I-10 In 1936 annexation by Miami Heights platted as one large block north of I-95 to serve as an eastern boundary for Everglades National Forest beyond which development could not go without prior written consent from both municipalities; this allowed for further subdivision outside park limits into residential areas east of I-95 while leaving undeveloped what is now known as "the western edge" of Everglades National Forest which touches parts of Southwest Dade County . It should be noted that these adjacent municipality boundaries can change over time due to annexations or reallocations by either municipality according to changing political borders
West Park, Florida was founded on December 12, 1892 by John and Clara Norris. The original town, which is now a part of Fort Meyers, was located on what is now the corner of Northwest 2nd Street and Broward Boulevard. The name originated from the fact that two of the first roads in West Park were called "Park Drive" because they ran near the Norris home. In 1916, West Park became a city and was annexed by Fort Meyers. On July 1, 1921, West Park lost its city status and merged with neighboring Clearwater to form a new city.
