Small batch coffee history in West Park, Florida started with the first coffee shop opened in 1984 by Allen and Linda Purdy. The couple ran a small business out of their home making roasts, grinding beans, and brewing coffee. In the early years of West Park's coffee community, it was common to find cafes and restaurants serving pre-packaged coffee made from ground beans that had been purchased from grocery stores or convenience stores. These days, most cafés and restaurants offer both loose grinds and packaged coffee. One of the earliest pioneers of small batch coffee was Joe's Coffee House at 5359 W Colonial Dr., which operated from 1984 to 1998. At Joe's, co-owners Allen Purdy and Tom Lauer used only whole bean roasted coffees for their espresso drinks and pastries. The popularity of small batch espresso led to other businesses starting up around town including Bigelow Coffee Company at 3650 W Colonial Dr., which served roast-your-own cupcakes; Java Junction Café at 3759 S Orange Ave., which served Indonesian food; The Gilded Cage Grill & Brewery at 3505 S Orange Ave.; Sweet Sensations Cafe & Brewery at 4341 S Orange Ave.; Blue Bottle Coffee at 3325 E Lowe Rd.; Two Hands Brewing Company at 3275 E Lowe Rd.; Dutch Bros Coffee Incorporated (DBCI) - a wholesale grocery store - began selling pre-packaged smallbatch coffees in 1996. In 2001, Second Street Coffee Co., a specialty retailer that sell single originroasted coffees through its doors only offered bottled water instead of brewed coffee because brewers were finding it difficult to maintain consistent quality on small batches due to differences in conditions within vessels when produced. This business served a small but popular selection of espresso drinks and pastries from their shop. In the early 1920s, the Willingham family moved to Fort Myers and opened a second small batch coffee shop called The Fort Myers Coffee House. In the 1940s, Fred Willingham added milk to their espresso drinks which gave them their now well-known taste. By the 1960s, The Fort Myers Coffee House had closed and Harry Willingham passed away, leaving his son Fred to continue this family tradition of smallbatch coffee service. Since then, many other families have operated small batches of coffee shops throughout Southwest Florida. Some of these businesses have continued to serve delicious espresso drinks while others have become legendary for their incredible milkoutput quality!
