Weston, Florida is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,623 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Broward County. Weston was founded in 1892 by explorer and naturalist George Washington Smith. The area that would become Weston was first occupied by the Timucua people who lived there for some time before they were overwhelmed by European settlers in the late 17th century. The first European to arrive in what is now Weston was Spanish missionary Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565. He named the place San Marcos de la Vega after his patron saint and called nearby Fort Lauderdale "Puerto Rico" because of its lack of a harbor. Another early settler was José Antonio Escobar y Crespo who arrived on horseback from Mexico City with goods he had bought from Native American chiefs near Lake Worth on October 3, 1795. In 1892, George Washington Smith discovered a rich coal field near Miami and decided to establish a town here to exploit it. He named it Weston after himself and laid out streets and platted blocksheets which are still seen today including Northwest Drive (now NW 5th Street), Northeast Drive (now NW 6th Street), Southwest Boulevard (now SW 1st Avenue), Northwest Park Boulevard (now Northwest Parkway) and Southwest Place (now SW 2nd Avenue). At this time Weston also included parts of Boca Raton and Miramar suburbs as well as parts of Sunrise Pointe west of Interstate 95 The town quickly grew into an important center for commerce due to its location within easy reach of major highways such as I-95 and US-1. In 1925, when Broward County became part of Florida, Weston became its county seat where it remains today In 1984, following passage of the state constitutional amendment giving all citizens voting rights regardless race or ethnicity beginning January 1st statewide elections that year, all wards except onesaw their voting populations increase significantly with majority African American majorities both within ward boundaries as well as outside them along with Hispanic majorities overall . This election led to then-Mayor Tomás Yarborough being reelected unopposed . As result of this change many businesses closed up shop or moved away leaving most residents without services or amenities; however , many businesses have since reopened thanks to various community/foundation partnerships

Weston, Florida is an unincorporated community in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale– Plantation Combined Statistical Area. The area now known as Weston was settled by Germans in 1851. A post office called "Weston" was established in 1852, and remained in operation until 1898. The community was named for General George Washington Weston (1786-1850), a Confederate general during the American Civil War who later became governor of Florida. In 1892, local businessmen founded the Weston phosphate mine to exploit nearby reserves of phosphate rock. The mine failed and closed in 1903; however, it reopened as a tourist attraction in 1997 after being abandoned for many years. In 1913, tract 10A was organized into collieries which were soon renamed "Weston" and "Pinecrest". By 1925 there were over 100 mines operating within the boundaries of Weston limits including some owned by Standard Oil Company and Gulf Oil Corporation; however production declined thereafter due to World War II shortages of coal and other minerals needed for war production. After the end of World War II, few new mines were developed onshore because severe competition from other resources led to a decline in prices for phosphate rock and other natural resources that had supported Weston's economy throughout its history. In 1978-1979 phosphate rock production restarted with two small projects but stopped again when market conditions changed significantly; however this revived interest several years later when prices increased sufficiently once more to make another go at mining again despite low profits due to changes in technology which made extraction less profitable than it used to be However much like most things done around here during those days things just didn't always stay that way so eventually mining stopped altogether some time ago
