He was looking for a new land to explore and found himself in the present day town of Weston. The captain built a sawmill in what is now downtown Weston and started trading with other ships passing through the area. The first store opened up on Chestnut Street in 1827. The harbor at Weston became an important stop for sailors travelling between Tampa Bay and Jacksonville. In 1914, the United States government leased land at Marina Boulevard and Gulf Drive to make way for Fort Lauderdale's airport. The townspeople retained control over their own affairs until 1959 when they were annexed by Broward County.

Weston, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. It was founded in 1892 by George Washington Weston and his family. The town became a county seat in 1907 and has since been the home of several notable residents including inventor Dr. J.B. Westfall, businessman and philanthropist Cecil B. Moore, former Mayor of Orlando Sanford Lee Beasley, author Leo Tolstoy, and current Governor Rick Scott. Weston was also the birthplace of American astronaut Neil Armstrong on July 20th 1969
Weston is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The first settlers in Weston were two men, John and James Weston, who traveled overland from Georgia in 1836. They built a cabin on the west side of bayou moccasin near where it current day US-1 crosses under I-4. They named their land "Weston" after their home state of Georgia. A post office was established at Weston in 1838, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1861, Confederate General Stonewall Jackson's army crossed the bayou and attacked Union troops stationed at Fort Brooke east of town. The Union soldiers retreated to a fortified position known as "Old Steward's House." Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest then ordered his forces to pursue the retreating Union soldiers across bayousreet between Wickham Point and Westport Landing Road (now US-1). The pursuing Confederates lost many men during this expedition including Colonel Abraham Lincoln Grimes Jr., which led to him being called "The Butcher of Jacksonville". As a result of this ambush, Governor Andrew Johnson issued an Order No 2 on July 3rd ordering all male citizens over 21 years old to leave the county within four days or face military forcible entry into the community by order of local sheriff William Jourdan. This ordinance aroused much protest from Weston citizens who refused to leave their homes without due process or legal recourse. On July 10th Johnson issued an Order No 3 ordering all males 16 years or older to present themselves for registration with local authorities within three days or be searched and arrested if found not registered. This order also generated significant opposition from some residents who saw it as another way for Johnson to consolidate power in his hands and suppress free speech rights enjoyed by many people in Weston County. Inresponse, several thousand civilians took up arms against Johnson's orders throughout late summer 1861 – oneofthe largest mass civil disobedience actions ever staged against Ulysses S Grant during his presidency.– resultingin five civilian deaths.– oneofthe longest gunfightsever fought during American Civil War
